Notre Dame's Matty Augustine, Chaz Smith to Undergo Surgery
Notre Dame offensive lineman Matty Augustine (foot) and cornerback Chaz Smith (wrist) suffered injuries during fall practice and will both undergo surgery, according to Notre Dame Football's PR Team. Augustine, who is dealing with a fifth metatarsal injury, has been competing to start at right guard, but he's been working behind Sullivan Absher. Smith, who is expected to be a deep reserve defensive back, is set to undergo surgery to fix a scaphoid injury. The second-year and first-year players, respectively, are expected to return to action at some point during the 2026 regular season. Injuries are never good, but these aren't critical losses for the Irish. That said, depth is as thin as ever in the hectic transfer portal era, so they are notable.
