Dan Stephens

686 articles

A San Francisco Giants and 49ers fan for life, Dan's earliest sports memories include getting rocked by the Loma Prieta earthquake while tuning in to Game 3 of the 1989 World Series and Joe Montana's rout of the Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV. Dan's interest in fantasy sports started with the franchise and front office modes that began appearing in sports video games in the '90s. His first foray into actual fantasy football and baseball leagues came around 1997. Dan made the jump from playing fantasy sports to writing about them in 2023. With over 20 years of experience playing fantasy football, one of Dan's biggest lessons learned is to stay on top of player utilization trends. He enjoys sharing his findings in his weekly "Warning Signals" column, published every Thursday. In 2025, he is also proud to be penning the fantasy outlooks for his hometown 49ers. You can reach Dan on X (@danifestmestiny) or Bluesky (@danifestmestiny.bsky.social) to discuss fantasy football starts/sits, the 49ers, and all things fantasy baseball.

Christian McCaffrey Seeking Fourth Straight RB1 Finish

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has started the season with three straight RB1 performances, be it standard, half-PPR scoring, or full-PPR scoring. Narrowed down to full-PPR, he has finished in the top five among running backs in each of the first three weeks of 2025. McCaffrey is poised to continue the streak on […]

Fantasy Football Warning Signals for Week 4? Jerry Jeudy, Travis Hunter, Trey Benson, Zach Ertz

Hello, RotoBallers, and welcome to the Week 4 edition of my fantasy football Warning Signals column. Each week, I lean into the pessimism I’m feeling about the coming slate of games and give you a handful of players to consider benching and the reasons I’m out on them. In Week 4, I’m staying away from […]

Skyy Moore Sees Bump In Usage In Week 3

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Skyy Moore saw a spike in Week 3's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Moore had seen just five offensive snaps through the first two games of the season, but saw his snap share shoot up to 52% in the 49ers' 16-15 win on Sunday. With Jauan Jennings (ankle/shoulder) absent from […]

Brian Robinson Jr. Sees Role Diminished In Week 3 Win

San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Robinson Jr. handled just two carries for 22 yards in the team's Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Robinson played the change-of-pace role in Weeks 1 and 2, garnering snap shares of 25% and 22% and seeing nine and six rushes, respectively. On Sunday, he was all but […]

Kendrick Bourne Sees Six Targets In Start

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne drew the start in Week 3 after Jauan Jennings (ankle/shoulder) was ruled out Sunday morning. Bourne saw six targets and finished with four receptions for 38 yards in the 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals. In his starting role, Bourne saw his snap share shoot up to 73% […]

Kyle Juszczyk Scores Touchdown In Win

San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk caught a one-yard touchdown pass in Sunday's 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The score, four minutes into the fourth quarter, was the first trip to the end zone by either side and broke what was then a 6-6 tie. Even with the 49ers' injury woes in the first […]

Impact Game Coming for San Francisco D/ST?

The San Francisco 49ers' defense has shown some promise in the early weeks of the 2025 season, but it will need to step things up to be a consistent factor in fantasy football. San Francisco held the Seahawks to just 13 points in Week 1, and in two games, has already recovered three fumbles. However, […]

Eddy Pineiro Looking To Impress In Home Debut

San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro was brought in for Week 2 after one miss too many by Jake Moody brought about his release. Naturally, Pineiro shanked his first kick with his new team, an extra-point try no less. Pineiro rebounded and made good on the rest of his attempts last Sunday, two extra points […]

Jake Tonges Not A Reliable Tight End Option

San Francisco 49ers tight end Jake Tonges may have been the hero of Week 1, but it was Luke Farrell who was given the start in Week 2. Tonges did end up with a greater snap share (78% to 59%), more targets (five to three), and a higher route participation rate (54.7% to 47.5%), but […]

Jordan Watkins Out For Week 3

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jordan Watkins (calf) has been declared out for the team's home opener in Week 3. The rookie initially popped up on the report after logging a limited practice on Thursday, which was followed by a DNP on Friday. Per ESPN's Nick Wagoner, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Watkins' injury […]

Increased Role For Kendrick Bourne In Homecoming?

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne operated as the team's WR3 in Week 2, seeing a 49% snap share and catching all three of his targets for 32 yards. In Week 3, he could be in line for more work when the 49ers host the Cardinals at Levi's Stadium, where Bourne made his NFL […]

Ricky Pearsall Ready For A Rebound In Week 3

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is looking like the team's de facto WR1 heading into the team's Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Fellow wideout Jauan Jennings (ankle/shoulder) did not practice this week and is listed as questionable on the team's final injury report. Pearsall could emerge as a top target for […]

Jordan James Cleared For Week 3

San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan James (finger) logged a week of full practices for the first time this season and carries no designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The rookie missed the season opener while recovering from a broken finger suffered in August, and was a healthy scratch in Week 2 […]

Brian Robinson Jr. Can Stay On The Bench In Week 3

Through Weeks 1 and 2, San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Robinson Jr. has been locked into a steady rotation with starter Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey has played roughly three-quarters of San Francisco's offensive snaps, with Robinson soaking up the rest as a change-of-pace back. So far this season, Robinson has been given 15 carries and […]

Christian McCaffrey A No-Brainer For Week 3

After back-to-back top-five finishes at his position, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is set to continue his dominant start to the season on Sunday. In Week 3, the 49ers match up against the Arizona Cardinals, a team that has been kind to McCaffrey in the past. In seven career games against them, McCaffrey […]

Mac Jones the Likely Starter for Week 3

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones is lined up for another start in place of Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) in Week 3. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said it is "highly unlikely" Purdy gets the start on Sunday. Jones finished as the QB7 in Week 2, completing 26 of 39 passes […]

Fantasy Football Warning Signals for Week 3? DeVonta Smith, Calvin Ridley, Cam Skattebo, more

Hello again, RotoBallers, and welcome back to my fantasy football Warning Signals column for Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season -- my weekly exercise in hand-wringing over what to do with fantasy football rosters in the week ahead. As we enter Week 3, sample sizes are small, but a season could hinge on decisions […]

Luke Farrell Catches Touchdown In Win

San Francisco 49ers tight end Luke Farrell drew the start in George Kittle's (hamstring) absence in Week 2. He caught two of his three targets for 15 yards and a touchdown in the team's 26-21 over the New Orleans Saints. Farrell may have had the start and the score on Sunday, but his 59% snap […]

Jake Tonges Falls Victim To Timeshare

San Francisco 49ers tight end Jake Tonges had four receptions for 31 yards in Sunday's 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints. While Tonges was the hero of Week 1, catching the go-ahead touchdown near the end of the game, Luke Farrell was San Francisco's starting tight end in Week 2. Farrell ended up with […]

Ricky Pearsall Tallies 56 Yards In Win

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall caught four passes for 56 receiving yards in the team's 26-21 win over the Saints on Sunday. His Week 2 yardage was just shy of half his total from Week 1, but he was readily involved in the passing attack, with his six targets ranking third on the […]

Kendrick Bourne Queued For Increased Role

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne operated as the team's No. 3 receiver in Week 2, just five days after signing with the team. In San Francisco's 26-21 win over New Orleans, Bourne caught all three of his targets for 32 receiving yards. His production expectedly lagged behind Jauan Jennings (ankle) and Ricky Pearsall, […]

Justin Fields Injury Report: Will Fields Play in Week 3 for Fantasy Football?

When Justin Fields signed with the New York Jets in March, it was seen as his second chance at making it as a starting quarterback in the NFL. A rocky tenure in Chicago had many questioning if Fields was cut out for the league. However, Fields benefited from a change of scenery in 2024, leading […]

Fantasy Football Warning Signals for Week 2 - Kenneth Walker, James Conner, Josh Downs, more

Hello, RotoBallers, and welcome back to another season of fantasy football! How did you finish in Week 1? Is your team already firing on all cylinders? Or did some of your stars stumble out of the starting blocks? Did you have one of the 12 top-25 wide receivers (per Yahoo ADP) who failed to reach […]

49ers D/ST a Favorite Against the Saints

The San Francisco 49ers defense/special teams has a juicy Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Exploiting second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler's inexperience will be key to San Francisco's success. Rattler has averaged 33.2 pass attempts per game but has a 57.3% completion rate in his young career. In Week 1, he let it rip […]

Eddy Pineiro Ready For First Game With 49ers

San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro signed with the team on September 10, in the wake of the release of Jake Moody. Pineiro does not have Moody's leg strength, but he is certainly more accurate. Despite attempting twice as many field goals as Moody in his career (126 to 62), Pineiro has one fewer miss […]

Jake Tonges Not Worth Streaming In Week 2

San Francisco 49ers tight end Jake Tonges was the hero of the team's Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Tonges stepped in for an injured George Kittle (hamstring) and caught the go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute and a half left in the game. With Kittle now on injured reserve, Tonges is now […]

Kendrick Bourne Reuniting With Mac Jones In Week 2

Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers on September 9, returning to the team that gave him his start in the NFL in 2017. The signing was in light of injuries sustained in Week 1 by key pass catchers George Kittle (hamstring), who is now on injured reserve, and […]

Skyy Moore Buried On Depth Chart Despite 49ers Injuries

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Skyy Moore stands little chance of making an impact in Week 2, despite the injury bug biting key players on offense. Even though tight end George Kittle (hamstring) is on injured reserve and wide receiver Jauan Jennings (shoulder) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, veterans Marquez Valdes-Scantling and […]

Marquez Valdes-Scantling Has Limited Upside In Week 2

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling saw zero targets on 15 routes run in Week 1. With George Kittle (hamstring) now on injured reserve and Jauan Jennings (shoulder) tagged as questionable for San Francisco's Week 2 matchup against the Saints, it is possible that Valdes-Scantling plays a bigger role on Sunday. Unfortunately, Brock Purdy […]

Brian Robinson Jr. Could Get More Work Amid 49ers Injuries

San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Robinson Jr. may see an uptick in usage when the team faces the Saints on Sunday. With quarterback Brock Purdy (toe, shoulder) out, wide receiver Jauan Jennings (shoulder) questionable, and tight end George Kittle (hamstring) on injured reserve, San Francisco is short on playmakers. In Week 2, San Francisco […]
