Yankees Plan to Keep Devin Williams in Closer's Role
The New York Yankees plan to keep right-hander Devin Williams in the closer's role, Aaron Boone said. They intend to have the new acquisitions fit in around him, Bryan Hoch, beat writer for the Yankees, reports. The Yankees significantly bolstered their bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring three high-leverage relievers in David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camilo Doval. All while still having Luke Weaver and Williams. It's been a rough year for Williams, with his 5.01 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. That being said, he does have 17 saves in 19 save opportunities. At one point this season, Weaver took over the closer role for the Yankees, so although Boone has stated that Williams will continue to work in the closer role, his leash just got a lot shorter with the acquisitions of Bird, Doval, and Bednar. Bednar and Doval were both closers for their previous ballclubs, and at this point, it's uncertain how the Yankees will prioritize their relievers. Fantasy managers will want to keep an eye out for how this plays out so they can adjust accordingly.
