Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander contributed a goal and two assists as the team kicked off the 2025-26 NHL campaign with a 5-2 home victory against the Montreal Canadiens. The visitors made it a tough game for Nylander's crew, but Toronto was able to shake them off in the final frame. After Morgan Rielly put the Maple Leafs 3-2 up, Nylander notched a goal and an assist with Montreal's net empty. His first helper came just a minute into the game when Bobby McMann lit the lamp. Nylander has registered 269 points (125 goals, 144 assists) over the last three seasons and looks poised for another highly productive year as one of Toronto's top forwards.--Taavi Pailk

Boston Bruins right wing David Pastrnak played a part in all of the team's goals in Wednesday's season-opening 3-1 shocking win against the Washington Capitals. Boston traveled to Washington as a big underdog but left with two points largely thanks to Pastrnak's efforts. He finished the contest with one goal and two assists. Starting the campaign strongly is nothing new for Pastrnak, as he has posted points in each of his past five season-opening games, just one short of the franchise record. There's no rest for the Bruins, as they have their home opener scheduled for Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks.--Taavi Pailk

Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel finished Wednesday's season-opening 6-5 shootout loss against the Los Angeles Kings with a goal and three assists. Two assists came on the power-play for Eichel, who is now the ninth player in NHL history to tally at least four points in multiple season openers. Eichel's outstanding performance came after the team announced that it had signed a massive eight-year, $108 million contract extension with him. The American star sure performed like a $100 million player against the Kings and will have great momentum for the rest of the week. Vegas faces the San Jose Sharks on Thursday and then heads to Seattle on Saturday.--Taavi Pailk

Vegas Golden Knights winger Pavel Dorofeyev scored the first hat trick of the new NHL season in Wednesday's 6-5 shootout loss against the Los Angeles Kings. The Russian forward became the fourth player in franchise history to score three goals in a single period, helping the team tie the game at three by the end of the second frame. He struck twice on the power play. Dorofeyev's three hat tricks lead all NHLers in 2025. His first outing of the new campaign was very impressive, considering Dorofeyev battled a lower-body injury for much of the preseason. It's safe to say he has completely moved on from the injury.--Taavi Pailk

New Jersey Devils defenseman Brett Pesce (undisclosed) will play in Thursday's season-opening matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports. "I feel great," Pesce told reporters Wednesday. "Ready to roll." This will be an exciting night for Pesce as he will play his 700th career game against the team that drafted him. Pesce spent nine seasons with the Hurricanes before signing with the Devils as a free agent last summer. The 30-year-old has limited fantasy potential. He finished his first year in New Jersey with 17 points (three goals, 14 assists), 99 shots, and 138 blocks in 72 appearances.--Taavi Pailk

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman K'Andre Miller (upper body) is expected to play in Thursday's season opener against the New Jersey Devils, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Miller had offseason upper-body surgery and sat out the entire preseason schedule. However, he will be ready for his Hurricanes debut on Thursday. The 25-year-old is projected to start life on his new team as a member of the second defensive pairing. We should also see Miller skate with the second power-play unit. Miller has been a two-way force during his NHL career but is coming off a disappointing year. During his final season with the New York Rangers, Miller was limited to 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) in 74 games.--Taavi Pailk

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin (undisclosed) will be available for Thursday's season opener against the New Jersey Devils, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Slavin didn't see any preseason action, but Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour suggested that it was mostly for precautionary reasons. Although Slavin is the leader of the Hurricanes' blue line, his fantasy production is usually modest. In 80 outings last season, Slavin recorded 27 points (six goals, 21 assists), 110 shots, and 136 blocks in 80 contests.--Taavi Pailk

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Alex Vlasic (lower body) is expected to play in Thursday's clash against the Boston Bruins, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. After suffering a skate cut on his leg, Vlasic traveled with the team for its season opener against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night but wasn't quite ready to play. However, he now appears fully recovered from the injury. Vlasic is set to join Sam Rinzel on the first defensive pairing, with Ethan Del Mastro making room in the lineup. The 24-year-old had a solid year last season, producing 30 points (four goals, 26 assists), 103 shots, and 157 blocks in 82 games.--Taavi Pailk

Portland Trail Blazers guard/forward Matisse Thybulle (knee) was sidelined for the team's preseason opener against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night due to right knee soreness. After playing in only 15 games last season due to ankle and knee issues, Thybulle can't seem to shake off injuries. When healthy, he has been an outstanding defender, averaging 1.6 steals for his career and earning two NBA All-Defensive Second Team selections. The Blazers have a light preseason schedule with only four games, so Thybulle must recover quickly if he wants to shake off some rust before the start of the regular season.--Taavi Pailk

Golden State Warriors guard Seth Curry missed a second straight preseason game on Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers. According to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters that Curry "is still ramping up" after the offseason. The Curry brothers are finally together on the same team, but it seems it will take some time before we see them sharing the floor. Adding Curry provides another three-point threat for the Warriors, but he probably won't see much action during the regular season.--Taavi Pailk

Orlando Magic point guard Jalen Suggs (knee) participated in individual non-contact drills during Wednesday's practice, Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel reports. This suggests Suggs still hasn't been cleared for contact with two weeks remaining until opening night against the Miami Heat. Suggs has been aiming for opening night as his return date, but even if he is ready for the first game of the season, the team might limit his workload. Tyus Jones is the leading contender to start at point guard instead of Suggs if he isn't able to recover in time for Oct. 22.--Taavi Pailk

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (knee) remained sidelined for Wednesday's preseason action against the Miami Heat. The 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year banged his knee in practice on Monday and sat out a second consecutive preseason matchup. Early reports indicated that Castle isn't facing a serious issue, so the Spurs might just be cautious with him, as there's no need to rush him into action during preseason. While Castle enjoyed a good rookie campaign, he may struggle to take the next step in 2025-26 with Dylan Harper (thumb) in town. Harper figures to play a big role in the Spurs backcourt once he has recovered from thumb surgery.--Taavi Pailk

Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes (knee) is battling left knee tendinopathy, TSN's Josh Lewenberg reports. Due to the issue, Barnes was unavailable for Wednesday's preseason contest against the Sacramento Kings. It's possible his left knee already bothered him during the team's preseason opener against the Denver Nuggets on Monday, as Barnes failed to make a field goal with six attempts and finished with one point in 19 minutes. Barnes is an exciting talent, and it's sad to see him struggling with injuries. Over the last two campaigns, he has played in only 125 regular-season games. Fortunately, his latest health issue doesn't seem serious, giving Barnes a chance to be healthy for the start of the campaign--Taavi Pailk

Boston Celtics guard/forward Jaylen Brown (knee) notched 21 points in 20 minutes in Wednesday's 121-103 preseason win against the Memphis Grizzlies. He shot 6-for-13 from the field with a 3-for-6 record from downtown and finished 6-for-8 at the line. Brown underwent a procedure on his right knee during the offseason and appears to be fully recovered, although he didn't do much else besides scoring against Memphis. With Jayson Tatum (Achilles) sidelined, Brown will be expected to take on more responsibilities this season and could have a career year if everything clicks. Brown has averaged 27.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in games without Tatum since the two became teammates in 2017.--Taavi Pailk

Detroit Lions edge defender Aidan Hutchinson is tied for third in the league with five sacks on the season and "looks destined for a new deal," according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. With Hutchinson in the fourth year of his career, he is extension eligible, and the two sides have had discussions about a possible long-term deal. He'll be expected to land in the range of Green Bay edge rusher Micah Parsons's record-setting new contract. Fowler is unsure if Hutchinson will surpass that mark, but will almost certainly be in the same neighborhood. It's great to see Hutchinson back and fully healthy after suffering a tough leg injury last season, and he is back as one of the best defensive players in the league.--Kyle McCarthy

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Will Dissly (knee) is off the injury report ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Dolphins. Dissly was able to get a full week of practice in last week, but ultimately didn't suit up against Washington. He missed three straight games with the knee injury, but appears to be on the right track to play in Week 6. He'll likely serve as a depth piece behind rookie Oronde Gadsden and Tyler Conklin.--Kyle McCarthy

New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson (ankle) was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, according to Mike Triplett of New Orleans Football. Johnson was questionable headed into Week 5 against the Giants, but was ultimately able to suit up and played 85% of the snaps. The returns of tight ends Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau could limit future opportunities for Johnson, but he is still the best pass catcher of the three and one of the Saints' best options overall. But he has fallen off a bit over the last two weeks after a hot start to the season. He'll rank as a mid-range TE2 for Week 6 against the Patriots.--Kyle McCarthy

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Dyami Brown (shoulder) was listed as limited in practice on Wednesday, according to the team. The 25-year-old missed their Week 4 matchup but was cleared from the injury report ahead of the Week 5 game against the Chiefs. He popped again here to begin the practice week, but he should likely be good to go again in Week 6. He caught two of four targets for 15 yards against the Chiefs and will likely only be relevant in deeper leagues on Sunday.--Kyle McCarthy

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Bhayshul Tuten (shoulder) was limited in practice on Wednesday, according to the team. After being limited in practice all last week, Tuten begins the Week 6 practice week with the same tag. He played in Monday night's win over the Chiefs, handling four rushes for only six yards and catching his lone target for five yards. The team may be keeping the rookie fresh during the week with the shoulder issue. Tuten will remain the primary backup to Travis Etienne Jr. for the time being and ranks as a low-end flex play for Week 6, assuming he is good to go.--Kyle McCarthy

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones (knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Jones has been battling a PCL sprain that he aggravated in their Week 3 win over Arizona. The injury hasn't affected Jones' performance too much as he has played very well in place of Brock Purdy (toe). In his three starts, Jones is completing 66.7% of his passes and averaging 302 passing yards and two touchdowns per game. And he showed tremendous fight while clearly playing hurt in their upset win over the Rams in primetime. While the 49ers will be without most of their pass-catching core again, Jones was able to make it work, mostly through Kendrick Bourne and Christian McCaffrey. Assuming Jones is good to go, he will rank as a high-end fantasy QB2 for a potential shootout against Tampa Bay in Week 6.--Kyle McCarthy

Dallas Cowboys running back Miles Sanders (knee, ankle) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice. Sanders returns to practice here after missing all the sessions last week before being ruled out for Week 5. The fact Sanders was able to practice at all is a positive sign. The 28-year-old is currently dealing with both a knee and ankle issue. If active, Sanders figures to serve in a reserve role to Javonte Williams in Week 6. The most touches Sanders has seen in a game is nine carries for 41 yards in Week 3. There's limited upside here with Williams healthy and running the ball well. If Sanders sits, Jaydon Blue could see more involvement, but isn't much of a fantasy option.--Andy Webb

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin (foot) doesn't expect to be ready to play for the Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Turpin appears to be in line to miss his second straight game due to a foot sprain. He hasn't officially been ruled out, but the fact that Turpin is saying this at the beginning of the practice week isn't a good sign. Ryan Flournoy hauled in six receptions for 114 yards last week. He figures to have an increased role again, but is more of a deep league option. Jalen Tolbert should see more of the field as well, but is coming off a dud in Week 5.--Andy Webb

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin (leg) was absent during Wednesday's practice session. Godwin made his season debut in Week 4 and already picked up a new injury. The 29-year-old is reportedly dealing with a fibula issue, which sounds like an injury that could sideline him in Week 6. It's only Wednesday, so fantasy managers shouldn't jump to conclusions yet. However, fantasy managers should monitor the injury report on Thursday and Friday. Fellow wideout Mike Evans (hamstring) remained out of practice on Wednesday. If they both sit, Emeka Egbuka and Sterling Shepard would be the top wideouts for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.--Andy Webb

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (hamstring) was unable to practice on Wednesday. This doesn't come as shocking news as Evans continues to work his way back from a hamstring strain he suffered in Week 3. Head coach Todd Bowles said Evans is making progress, but didn't give much information on a possible timetable for Evans. There is a chance that Evans does practice this week and play against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. However, fantasy managers should prepare for Evans to likely miss at least one more game. Fellow wide receiver Chris Godwin (leg) also missed Wednesday's practice session. If both wideouts are out, Emeka Egbuka and Sterling Shepard would be the top options in the receiving game.--Andy Webb

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers (shoulder) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice session. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too worried as this seems like a minor issue. It's the beginning of the practice week, so teams are usually cautious even with minor issues. Flowers is coming off a game where he hauled in five receptions for 72 yards in last week's loss to the Houston Texans. It's unclear if quarterback Lamar Jackson (hamstring) will be back in Week 6. If not, all of the Ravens offensive players will take a hit in value. If Flowers sits out, Rashod Bateman and DeAndre Hopkins would see bigger roles. For now, fantasy managers should consider Flowers as day-to-day and expect him to suit up in Week 6.--Andy Webb

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (hip, thumb) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice session. Tagovailoa apparently suffered a hip and left thumb injury during last Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. The 27-year-old didn't show any signs of being injured when he threw for 256 yards with three touchdowns. He's finally starting to turn a page with five touchdowns and zero interceptions over his last two games. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too worried about Tagovailoa for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. It's the beginning of the week and the Dolphins are going to be careful especially with Tagovailoa's injury history. At the moment, fantasy managers should fully expect Tagovailoa out there for Week 6.--Andy Webb

The first SEC injury report lists Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (hand) as questionable to play against Texas. Mateer underwent hand surgery on September 24, with recovery time initially listed as 3-4 weeks. Mateer's hand has healed well, leading to speculation that he would be able to play in the Red River Shootout against unranked Texas at the Texas State Fair in Dallas on Saturday. That is just 17 days after the surgery. Mateer's questionable status is not a guarantee that he will play, but it does mean that he is available should Oklahoma choose to use him. Betting lines open with Texas as a 3.5-point favorite, but they flipped to Oklahoma early Wednesday afternoon, further fueling the speculation that Mateer will be available. Oklahoma is required to issue another availability report 90 minutes before the 3:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff on Saturday afternoon.--Mike Marteny - RotoBaller

In his return to practice for the first time this year on Wednesday, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (knee) was listed as limited, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. The Packers opened Watson's 21-day practice window to officially return from the Physically Unable to Perform list. It means that the 26-year-old can resume practicing with the team, but it doesn't make him a lock to make his 2025 debut in Week 6 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Watson suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in the Week 18 regular-season finale last year, which is why he has missed the first five games of 2025. At the very least, though, Watson deserves waiver-wire consideration with his return on the horizon. When healthy, Watson gives the Packers an explosive deep threat, although his fantasy value could very well be boom/bust in a crowded Packers receiving room.--Keith Hernandez

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston (hamstring) was listed as a limited practice participant in the first practice of the week on Wednesday. It's unclear if Johnston is in danger of missing a Week 6 game against the Miami Dolphins on the road, but it's something worth watching the rest of the week. The 24-year-old former first-rounder came out of the gates hot in his third NFL season to post four touchdowns in the first four weeks, but he had his worst game of the year in the Week 5 loss to the Washington Commanders, catching four passes for 40 yards while also losing a fumble. Johnston isn't going away in L.A.'s offense, though, and the Bolts could be looking to throw the ball more with rookie running back Omarion Hampton (ankle) on Injured Reserve. If Johnston is active in Week 6, he'll have a good chance to score his fifth TD of the year against Miami.--Keith Hernandez

The Eagles defense/special teams unit wasn't anything special against the Broncos, allowing 21 points while getting two sacks and forcing no turnovers. However, on Thursday night, Philadelphia lines up against the Giants, who score just 17.4 points per game-fifth-worst in the league. New York is also missing their best offensive weapon in Malik Nabers, and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart is still new to the starting role. In their most recent contest against the Saints, the G-Men turned the ball over five times. This Philly defense is primed for a successful week and should definitely be considered start-worthy against a favorable opponent.--Ricky Maloney - RotoBaller
