Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson committed his long-term future to the team on Monday by signing an eight-year contract extension. He will earn $70.8 million over the course of the deal, meaning Hutson will have an $8.85 million cap hit starting next season. $55 million of Hutson's new contract is a signing bonus. Hutson burst onto the scene in style last season, matching the single-season NHL record for most assists by a rookie defenseman with 60 and tallying 66 points in 82 games. He became Montreal's first Calder Trophy winner since Ken Dryden in 1972. Given he's only 21, it's frightening what Hutson could do in the future with more experience and better players around him.--Taavi Pailk
