2 years agoCincinnati Reds starting pitcher Amir Garrett (hip), who finished 3-8 with a 7.39 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 14 starts in 2017, said he feels stronger after undergoing right hip surgery. He received platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell injections in his hip as well. "It helped a lot. I feel a lot stronger and stuff now. The good thing about that was I didn't have to miss any time," Garrett said. "I just needed to get healthy all the way, that's it. I've been working on my body, and I'm down 10 pounds now. I feel like I'm back to my old self." Garrett came out of the gates hot, posting a 1.83 ERA and three quality starts in his first three games, but he was optioned to the minors on May 7 and went 0-4 with a 12.49 ERA from May 18 to June 20. Garrett lost some velocity on his straight fastball, but it may have been due to his hip ailment. If he can bet better results with his heater, Garrett could rebound with better health over a full season, but he's a high-risk, high-reward late-round flier.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
