BALLER MOVE: Target Around ~133 Overall
CURRENT ADP: ~162
ANALYSIS: Justin Jackson is a strong candidate to share touches with Austin Ekeler during the season. However, the Chargers will be distributing rushing attempts between multiple backs, and rookie Joshua Kelly should also garner carries that are not designated for Ekeler.
Ekeler finished at RB4 in PPR scoring and should sustain last year’s statistical momentum while performing as LA’s pass-catching weapon from the backfield. But Jackson has demonstrated his ability to operate effectively when his touches are interspersed with Ekeler’s. Jackson was involved in 29.6% of the Chargers’ offensive snaps when former teammate Melvin Gordon was holding out last September. He capitalized by assembling 142 yards on 18 attempts while averaging an impressive 7.9 yards per attempt.
The Chargers selected Jackson in Round 7 of the 2018 NFL Draft after he rushed for at least 1,187 yards during each of his four seasons at Northwestern. He also became the school’s all-time leader in multiple categories, including rushing attempts (1,142), rushing yards (5,440), all-purpose yards (6,298), and touchdowns (42).
Jackson joined Ekeler in commandeering first-team reps at the onset of training camp. But Kelly has quickly overcome the constraints of a limited offseason and has also received reps with the starters. Kelly ran for 2,303 yards and 24 touchdowns in two seasons at UCLA while becoming the eighth Bruin to register consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He also provides a physical presence that should keep him involved in the distribution of touches.
Jackson is being selected at RB52 in current drafts. That makes him worthy of investment despite the uncertainty of his competition with Kelly. PFF is projecting him to finish as the RB41, and he can meet that expectation if he captures a respectable workload.
