Hot MLB Prospects to Watch for Fantasy Baseball - August 2025

Welcome back, RotoBallers! We're deep into the heart of August. The trade deadline has come and gone, and while MLB teams are ramping up for the postseason push, we should be keeping an eye on every club's minor league prospects, too.

Monitoring the top fantasy baseball prospects who have turned heads thus far is imperative. The players listed here are coming off dominant weeks and have significant long-term upside. Don't be surprised when these exact names are painting corners, mashing homers, and swiping bags at the big league level soon.

Savvy fantasy managers looking for an edge in their leagues should watch these players over the long haul, as they may soon be excellent additions.

Nick Schnell, OF, Washington Nationals

Level: Triple-A
2025 stats: 96 G, .286/.344/.521, 18 HR, 65 RBI, 70 R, 18 SB, 7.6% BB%, 29.6% K%, .375 BABIP, .379 wOBA, 134 wRC+

Schnell was the Rays' first-round pick in 2018, but he hit minor league free agency before making much of an impact. He never made it past Triple-A with the Rays organization, and there, he slashed just .213/.263/.337 with five strikeouts and 38 walks.

This past winter, Schnell signed with the Nationals, and he's arguably playing the best baseball of his career. The 25-year-old has showcased a blend of power and speed, amassing 18 home runs and an 18-for-20 stolen base success rate. The biggest flaw in his game has been a tendency to strike out, which he's doing at a 29.6 percent clip thus far.

Schnell had a terrific month of July, slashing .385/.449/.854 with 11 home runs, 25 RBI, and a 9-for-9 success rate on the basepaths. He finished the month with an otherworldly 232 wRC+. Even his plate discipline saw some improvement; he owned a 0.20 BB/K rate entering July, and a 0.36 BB/K rate from July 1 through July 31.

Sean Sullivan, SP, Colorado Rockies

Level: Double-A
2025 stats: 16 G, 16 GS, 9-4, 87.1 IP, 2.16 ERA, 2.62 FIP, 9.69 K/9, 1.55 BB/9, 0.52 HR/9, 39.7% GB%, .256 BABIP

Sullivan was the Rockies' second-round pick in 2023, fetching a $1.7 million signing bonus after an impressive collegiate career at Wake Forest. He doesn't throw particularly hard, but his low release height poses a challenge for opposing hitters, especially in short relief spurts.

Although Sullivan's ground ball rate is low (39.7 percent rate), he hasn't allowed a whole lot of damage. He has amassed 9.69 K/9, 1.55 BB/9, and 0.52 HR/9, suggesting that he doesn't have overpowering stuff, but he has great control and doesn't get destroyed by loud contact. Rather, he successfully pitches to outs while maintaining a respectable average of just over one strikeout per inning.

Sullivan made five appearances (all starts) in July, posting an impressive 1.84 ERA along with 10.43 K/9, 1.53 BB/9, and 0.31 HR/9. The left-hander's low velocity and unexpected release height make him a candidate to be hit around the second time through an order, but we didn't see that in July. He has the potential to be a late-innings reliever in the majors, and a mid-rotation starter is still in the cards.

Spencer Jones, OF, New York Yankees

Level: Triple-A
2025 stats: 81 G, .293/.394/.640, 30 HR, 62 RBI, 78 R, 25 SB, 13.4% BB%, 30.4% K%, .349 BABIP, .448 wOBA, 183 wRC+

Jones' career so far has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. It's been a story of extremes on both ends of the spectrum, as Jones can fluctuate from being a bottom-tier minor leaguer to a top-tier prospect in the matter of months. FanGraphs even defined his strikeout tendency as "bust-indicating" in 2024, comparing him to Franchy Cordero. However, he has since rebounded with 30 homers this season and a 26 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A.

Jones' walk rate has gone up this season, but what's been most impressive is his ability to hit home runs. His power output has been unparalleled in Minor League Baseball, as he sports a .640 slugging percentage and 183 wRC+. The strikeout, chase, and whiff rates are still far from ideal, but they're a little more forgivable now that Jones is mashing a homer nearly every other game.

Jones really seemed to turn the corner in the month of July when he slashed .419/.477/.946 with 11 home runs and seven stolen bases. He posted a .527 ISO and 253 wRC+. Meanwhile, he maintained a solid 10.2 percent walk rate while cutting his strikeout rate down to a respectable 22.7 percent.

Braden Davis, SP, St. Louis Cardinals

Level: High-A
2025 stats: 21 G, 18 GS, 4-1, 94.1 IP, 2.67 ERA, 3.43 FIP, 12.21 K/9, 6.01 BB/9, 0.38 HR/9, 47.4% GB%, .247 BABIP

Davis was the Cardinals' fifth-round pick in 2024, making his way to pro ball by way of Sam Houston State and Oklahoma. He impressed on the college circuit and wasted no time picking up where he left off when he made his Minor League Baseball debut this April.

The southpaw's fastball sits in the low-90s, but his best pitch is the changeup. He throws the offspeed pitch more than 25 percent of the time, and despite its high usage, it has a very low opponent xwOBA of .144. It also carries a 60.3 percent whiff rate and 7.9 percent hard-hit rate. He rounds out his repertoire with a cutter and slider, the latter of which has impressive depth.

Davis made five starts in the month of July, never allowing more than one run in a single outing. He finished the month with a 1.14 ERA, 3.8 BB/9, and 14.5 K/9. Walks have been a concern for most of this year, but he issued free passes at a lower clip in July. Plus, he has an undisputed ability to rack up strikeouts at an above-average clip.

Edward Florentino, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates

Level: Single-A
2025 stats: 71 G, .288/.403/.547, 14 HR, 51 RBI, 50 R, 31 SB, 14.5% BB%, 21.6% K%, .333 BABIP, .444 wOBA, 161 wRC+

Florentino, just 18 years old, has looked terrific during his first year in the pros. The Dominican Republic product was promoted to Single-A on June 21, and just a handful of weeks later, he won Florida State League Player of the Month for July 2025.

The young prospect is capable of mashing the baseball and producing major damage. He hits plenty of home runs, and so far, his power tendencies haven't resulted in concerning strikeout rates. He has primarily played center field this year, but there's a widespread expectation that his size and offensive profile will shift him to first base long-term.

In the month of July, Florentino slashed .301/.433/.663 with eight home runs and 23 RBI. He posted a 16.2 percent walk rate and 22.9 percent strikeout rate. Furthermore, he was a thief on the basepaths, stealing 16 bags while being thrown out just once.
