Sunday at Colonial was Texas golf through and through: hot, windy, and dry. Ben Griffin silenced the haters by holding on to secure his first individual PGA Tour title. Conditions were the toughest players had seen all week, with only 20 players shooting under par rounds for the day. It wasn't an exciting watch by any stretch, but Griffin's victory will be a name to watch the rest of the year and potentially in September at Bethpage.

The PGA Tour now moves to Dublin, Ohio, for the Memorial Tournament. The penultimate Signature Event for the 2025 season, all of the big names, minus Rory McIlroy, are back together again. Jack Nicklaus' continued efforts to rewrite the blueprints of his prized course have kept Muirfield Village as one of the most difficult tests in professional golf, and it is one of the most coveted wins for any professional golfer. As most world-renowned places do, the cream rises to the top year in and year out.

2025 Memorial Tournament

Scottie Scheffler and company will play on an untouched Muirfield Village from last season. The world No. 1 will be looking to defend yet another title from last season, as he beat Collin Morikawa by one shot to pick up his fifth of eight wins last season. Scheffler would be the first player to defend here since Tiger's three-peat from 1999-2001.

It will be the 49th playing of the Memorial Tournament, and if scores from the last two years are any indication, things will feel as close to a major championship test as anything these players will see on the schedule. Scores rarely reach double digits here, which is exactly how Mr. Nicklaus wants it. Since many players will likely skip next week's event in Canada, this will be the final tune-up before Oakmont.

An absent Rory McIlroy certainly dappens things, as his track record through the years is one of the more impressive resumes on Tour. However, there is no shortage of firepower this week to take our minds away from that. The result for many stars at Quail Hollow a couple of weeks ago has some looking to regain some confidence and momentum before their sanity is tested at the U.S. Open.

Muirfield Village

When it comes to preparing the game's best players for major championship golf, there aren't many courses that do it better than Muirfield Village. It is an interesting piece of property that can yield some low numbers throughout a tournament, but rarely does it provide the chance to do it all four days. It's truly a getable layout for players hot with their irons, but Muirfield will throw haymakers throughout 72 holes; the winners take it on the chin, while the losers crumble.

Jack's place is a generous driving course in terms of fairway width, but nuanced positioning can make or break approach shots. Wrong angles into holes can turn them from green light specials to sucker pins quickly. Making scoring difficult when players get out of position.

Still, approach play and short game are the most important attributes around this course, by far. A par 72 playing over 7,500 yards will likely feel like a relief to some of the shorter guys who played at the PGA Championship, even if three of four par-3s are playing over 200 yards. The rough will be as nasty as the PGA Tour allows, and players who navigate it correctly will significantly improve their chances of finding themselves in the mix on the weekend.

The Horse

Scottie Scheffler

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('24), 3rd ('23 & '21)

Doesn't it feel like deja vu at this point? Even before last season's historical run, Scottie Scheffler has been establishing incredible history everywhere. Given his incredible ability with approach play, it isn't surprising to see him shine here. However, his +2.060 strokes gained on approach average over his last 16 rounds at Muirfield is an absurd metric that should scare the daylight out of everyone else in the field.

 

The Ponies

Collin Morikawa

  • Notable Finishes: 2nd ('24 & '21)


Perhaps the most tailor-made player in the field for this golf course is Collin Morikawa, especially for players who haven't gotten the job done in this event. He narrowly missed forcing a playoff last season and lost in a playoff to Patrick Cantlay a few years ago. However, he does know what it's like to win on this golf course, doing so in 2020 at the then Workday Charity Open played the week before.

Like Scheffler, Morikawa has garnered success here with the irons, averaging +1.284 in strokes gained on approach while averaging +0.671 off the tee. As long as the short game and putting don't let him down, he'll be one to watch out for come Thursday.

 

Si Woo Kim

  • Notable Finishes: 4th ('23), T9 ('21)


Since 2020, Si Woo Kim has had the goods for Muirfield Village dialed up. He hasn't finished outside the top 20 in his last five starts here. While nothing he's done from a strokes gained perspective leaps off the screen, his consistency across the board has ranked him fourth in the field in average total strokes gained (+1.938).

Ball striking has been on a downward trend over his last two starts this season. It will be a big momentum boost if the 29-year-old can find something in that department before going to Oakmont.

Patrick Cantlay

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('21 & '19), T3 ('22)


2024 was an unquestionably poor season for Patrick Cantlay, who missed the cut here for the first time in eight career starts. I'm chalking that up to the ebbs and flows of the game, because it takes a lot to win here, and Cantlay has had the game to do it twice. That's rarified air, but the putting and short game have been a little unpredictable of late, making it hard to know exactly what we're going to get from the 33-year-old.
