Horse For The Course: PGA DFS Course History - 2022 Wyndham Championship

Joe Nicely's under-the-radar DraftKings, FanDuel PGA DFS picks for the 2022 Wyndham Championship His Horse for the course for daily fantasy golf is based on course history.

Hello PGA DFS family and welcome back to Horse For The Course! Tony Finau, a player that failed to win so many times he earned the nickname "Top Five Tony", captured his second victory in as many weeks at Detroit Golf Club. Finau has now doubled his career win total in the last two weeks and looks to be a strong contender as we prepare to head into the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Speaking of the Playoffs, we head to North Carolina to wrap up the PGA Tour's regular season with this week's season-ending Wyndham Championship. Let's dive in!

Horse For The Course is an article that highlights players in this week's field with elite course history and is part of our free PGA DFS content here at RotoBaller. 2022 Wyndham Championship Overview

After a lengthy season marked by unprecedented change in the game of golf, the PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for its regular season finale...the Wyndham Championship.

The Wyndham serves as a last chance for players to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs and to lock up their PGA Tour cards for next season. Only the top-125 in the points standings will move on to the Playoffs next week in Memphis and be assured of a spot for the 2022-23 golf season.

While by no means star-studded, a rock-solid field is set to tee it up in Greensboro this week with defending Wyndham champion Kevin Kisner leading an entrant list that includes Will Zalatoris, Webb Simpson, Sungjae Im, and Shane Lowry. One of golf's hottest young players, Joohyung "Tom" Kim will be in the field on a sponsor's exemption, while veterans such as Adam Scott, Justin Rose, and Billy Horschel round out the regular-season finale.

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. And be sure to read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS articles to help you win big!

The Course: Sedgefield CC

Par 70 - 7,131 Yards, Greens: Bermuda, Designed By: Donald Ross

This little Donald Ross gem has been a presence on the professional circuit since the 1930's and has now played host to this event for 13 consecutive years. At just over 7,100 yards, length won't be an issue for the players this week (Henrik Stenson won here a few years ago without hitting his driver one time. Literally never hit driver all week!). Fairways and greens are the order of the day at Sedgefield. In true Ross fashion, these greens are some of the smallest on the PGA Tour schedule and do have tricky undulations, but this track routinely ranks as one of the easiest on the PGA Tour schedule.

It seems like we emphasize ball striking every week, but it is without a doubt crucial at Sedgefield. It's a bit of an outlier event in that I'm paying absolutely no attention to distance. I'll be focusing on ball strikers that are both accurate off the tee and precise with their irons - especially wedges - on approach. Birdies will be needed in bunches to contend and we'll need to identify players that have the ability to go low.

I always recommend checking out RotoBaller's PGA Premium Course Breakdown by Josh Bennett for an in-depth breakdown of this week's golf course!

Recent Wyndham Championship Winners & Scores

  • 2021: Kevin Kisner (-15)
  • 2020: Jim Herman (-21)
  • 2019: J.T. Poston (-22)
  • 2018: Brandt Snedeker (-21)
  • 2017: Henrik Stenson (-22)

The Horse

Sungjae Im

  • Event Scoring Average: 66.42
  • Notable Event Finishes: T24 (2021), T9 ('20), T6 ('19)
  • DraftKings Price: $10,500 FanDuel Price: $11,300

Like most golf fans, I love Sungjae Im. I also have a huge respect for his game, but he rarely seems to find his way into my DFS lineups. That won't be the case this week as I can't wait to lock in the young South Korean on this Wyndham slate.

Im has been consistently great in previous trips to Sedgefield, accumulating a 66.42 career scoring average on the Ross layout - a mark that's the best in the field this week - as well as a pair of top-10 finishes across three Wyndham starts. In addition to his excellence on this golf course, he comes into this year's edition on the heels of his best ball-striking performance of 2022. He gained a massive 10.7 strokes T2G en route to a runner-up finish at the 3M Open two weeks ago.

It's easy to forget that Im is still just 24-years-old and also tested positive for COVID earlier this summer, which could explain what's been something of an underwhelming year...at least by his lofty standards. There's a strong chance that the youngster makes amends by closing the regular season with a victory this week.

The Ponies

Webb Simpson

  • Event Scoring Average: 66.66
  • Notable Event Finishes: Win ('11), Four Top-3 finishes since 2017
  • DraftKings Price: $10,700 FanDuel Price: $11,600

Yes...the "Play Webb at the Wyndham" narrative is a cliche, but it's impossible to ignore in a course history article. To put things into perspective, Simpson's Strokes Gained: Total mark of 60.4 in the Wyndham is double that of the player with the second-best mark (Billy Horschel at + 30.87) and is the highest that I've ever seen since I started writing this article in 2018.

That said, his Wyndham track record is certainly baked into Simpson's DFS price tags this week, as his 2022 form doesn't come close to justifying his $10.7k mark on DK or $11.6k tag on FD. So...we're left in a bit of pickle with the veteran this week. Do we play the percentages and overpay? Or, do we give credence to his recent form and look at other high-priced alternatives?

It might be something of a cop-out, but I'm willing to let ownership make that decision for me. If it looks as though Simpson is going to be a popular option, I'll gladly dodge his high ownership and inflated price tag. However, it seems as though folks aren't getting on board in this spot, I'll go overweight in an effort to get contrarian by paying up. Either way, what he does this week will be a very interesting case study in both course history and game theory.

Si Woo Kim

  • Event Scoring Average: 67.30
  • Notable Event Finishes: Win ('16), T2 ('21), T3 ('20), 5th ('19)
  • DraftKings Price: $8,800 FanDuel Price: $10,300

A notoriously-streaky player, Si Woo Kim rolls into the Wyndham on the heels of back-to-back top-15 finishes in his last two starts. He's gained a combined 14.9 strokes total over that pair of outings and will attempt to keep things going on a Sedgefield course where he's played the most consistent golf of his career.

The South Korean captured his first PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham back in 2016 and he's continued his excellence on the Ross-designed layout in subsequent years. After dropping a massive six-man playoff last year, Kim has now logged three consecutive top-five finishes at Sedgefield. Two missed cuts on his Wyndham resume serve to remind us that this is still Si Woo Kim, but I'm willing to take on that volatility in exchange for the tournament-winning upside he offers at this sub-$9k price point on DraftKings.

C.T. Pan

  • Event Scoring Average: 67.81
  • Notable Event Finishes: T29 ('21), T2 ('18)
  • DraftKings Price: $7,400 FanDuel Price: $8,900

A missed cut last week in Detroit isn't super encouraging, but I like C.T. Pan's chances to bounce back this week in Carolina. He fits the Brendon Todd, Kevin Na, Kevin Kisner mold of players that we want to circle on short courses and his Wyndham record reflects as much. Pan has made the cut in all four of his career trips to Sedgefield and was a late errant drive away from winning the 2018 edition. The light hitter grades out 38th in Good Drives Gained over his last 50 measured rounds and this Ross layout is a course on which accuracy off the tee actually matters.

Some DFS players will be scared off by last week's performance at the Rocket Mortgage, but this feels like a nice "buy low" spot with a veteran grinder that's a terrific fit for this layout.
