The Washington Commanders re-signed kicker
Zane Gonzalez to an undisclosed deal on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Gonzalez took over for an injured
Austin Seibert (hip) before Week 13 last season and finished the year (including three playoff games) by making 12 of his 15 field-goal attempts and all 27 of his extra-point tries in nine games. That was enough to convince the Commanders that the 29-year-old deserves a shot to open the 2025 season as their primary placekicker. Gonzalez was returning to the NFL in 2024 for the first time since he kicked in 12 games for the Carolina Panthers back in 2021. Washington is one of the better up-and-coming offenses in the NFL after quarterback
Jayden Daniels led them to the NFC Championship in his rookie season, so at the very least, Gonzalez will be a fantasy streaming option to open next season.

The Washington Commanders have acquired wide receiver
Deebo Samuel Sr. from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Samuel's name has been around several trade discussions throughout the offseason after his disappointing 2024 campaign. In 2024, Samuel found the back of the end zone just four times and tallied 836 all-purpose yards. Through the air, Samuel caught 670 yards on 51 receptions. This was his lowest receiving total since the 2022 campaign. On the ground, Samuel ran for 136 yards, which is his lowest total in a season in which he played in at least 15 games. The Washington Commanders lacked a proven No. 2 wideout opposite of
Terry McLaurin throughout the 2024 season. Even though McLaurin set the franchise record in receiving touchdowns, their No. 2 and No. 3 wide receivers,
Noah Brown and
Dyami Brown, combined for just two receiving scores. Fantasy managers should expect Samuel to operate as the No. 2 pass catcher opposite of McLaurin. Even though he is entering his seventh professional season, he will still carry value as a WR2 in all formats catching passes from breakout rookie
Jayden Daniels. In San Francisco,
Brandon Aiyuk will operate as the top wideout with
Jauan Jennings and
Ricky Pearsall slotting behind him.

The Washington Commanders have permitted defensive lineman Jonathan Allen to seek a trade, according to NFL insider Ari Meirov. The two-time Pro Bowler is entering the final season of his deal with Washington and has no guaranteed money left on his contract. Allen has spent his entire career with Washington since being selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The Commanders have Daron Payne on the roster and invested a first-round pick in defensive tackle Johnny Newton last year, so Allen could be on his way out. Allen has compiled 42 sacks in 109 career games and remains one of the better defensive linemen in the NFL. There should be a significant group of interested suitors.

The Athletic's Ben Standig suggests that Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who is headed into the final year of his four-year, $72 million extension, could be a salary cap casualty this offseason. Allen has a $22.47 million cap hit in 2025 but only a $6 million dead-cap charge. The Commanders have plenty of cap space this year, but fellow defensive tackle Daron Payne will count more than $20 million against the cap as well. Allen suffered a left pectoral tear in 2024, and the Commanders have a potential replacement in Johnny Newton, who they drafted in the second round last year. The 30-year-old former 17th overall pick in 2017 played in just eight regular-season games (seven starts) and had 19 tackles (16 solo), three sacks, and seven QB hits. Allen was a Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022, but his production has dipped the last two seasons.

The Washington Commanders hired Jesse Madden to their coaching staff as an offensive quality control coach, according to Commanders.com. Madden is the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden and just graduated from the University of Michigan. Madden played quarterback before switching to cornerback and was a member of the 2024 Michigan College Football Playoff National Championship team. He enters his first year as an NFL coach in 2025.

The Washington Commanders are expected to be very aggressive this offseason as they look to improve their defense, and they'll have more than $68 million in salary cap space. Washington will certainly be a team to watch if the Cleveland Browns give in to All-Pro pass-rusher Myles Garrett's trade demands, but The Athletic's Zac Jackson also believes they'll be a candidate to trade for Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II (hamstring). If the Browns were to trade Newsome this offseason, it would open up around $13 million in 2025 cap space and allow Cleveland to add pieces to their roster, potentially even a veteran starting quarterback. The 24-year-old Newsome ended his 2024 season on Injured Reserve due to a hamstring injury and finished with a career-low 27 tackles (24 solo), one interception and five pass breakups in 13 games (three starts).

ESPN's Dan Graziano expects the Washington Commanders to be aggressive this offseason in pursuing upgrades on defense after they were able to reach the NFC Championship with rookie quarterback
Jayden Daniels. The Commanders know they have something special in Daniels and want to maximize his rookie-contract window. If the Cleveland Browns decide to trade disgruntled All-Pro pass-rusher Myles Garrett eventually, the Commanders are one team that could go all out to acquire him. If it's not Garrett, the Commanders will still likely go after an impact player or two this offseason as they look to improve their defense, which was a weakness in 2024 -- Washington's defense ranked 19th in defensive EPA this year.

Jayden Daniels was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year on Thursday. This doesn't come as surprise given Daniels had one of the best seasons for a rookie QB. He threw for 3,568 passing yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 17 regular season games. He also got it done on the ground with 891 rushing yards and six additional scores with his legs. Daniels was a huge part of helping the Commanders make the postseason and the NFC title game. The 24-year-old should be in the MVP discussion for years to come.

The Washington Commanders announced on Thursday that they re-signed running back
Michael Wiley to a Reserve/Futures deal. Wiley was an undrafted rookie out of the University of Arizona but eventually found his way onto the Commanders' practice squad during the 2024 season. The 24-year-old never got brought up to the active 53-man roster for a regular season game, though, and he will now look to continue his development this offseason in Washington before he makes his case for a roster spot in spring training this summer. Wiley stands at 5-foot-10 and 209 pounds and is a native of Houston, Texas.

Marcus Mariota is very much on the Miami Dolphins' and Las Vegas Raiders' radar this offseason as they seek to add a proven, established No. 2 QB. The Dolphins are seeking insurance for quarterback
Tua Tagovailoa, whose history of head injuries are well-documented. In Vegas, the Raiders could look to reunite Mariota with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who coached Mariota for two years at Oregon. The 31-year-old played well in limited action in 2024 with Washington, going 34-for-44 for 364 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He's started 74 games in the NFL and has a 90.1 career passer rating, 97 TDs and 55 interceptions after the Titans made him the second overall pick in 2015. If Miami can't sign Mariota, they could pivot to 37-year-old
Andy Dalton.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Washington Commanders could target defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa during free agency. Given his versatility and traits, Fowler noted that teams view Odighizuwa as the top defensive tackle available on the market. Fowler mentioned that Washington is a team to watch as head coach Dan Quinn has been a "big fan" of Odighizuwa's play during their time together in Dallas. During the 2024 season, Odighizuwa appeared in all 18 contests with the Dallas Cowboys and tallied 47 tackles (25 solo) with 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble. This was a slight improvement compared to the 46 tackles and three sacks he tallied during the 2023 campaign. The Commanders struggled to defend the run this season, as they allowed the third-most rushing yards per game this season. Odighizuwa would provide much-needed depth to the interior of their defensive line.

Jayden Daniels this season and had one of his better campaigns in recent memory. Ertz went on to say he felt rejuvenated this year and believes he can still get better. He also made it clear that he'd like to play in Washington again in 2025 if they'll have him. Whether that's the case remains to be seen, but he's undoubtedly played himself into another contract and still has the drive to play.

The 25-year-old signal-caller didn't make the 53-man active roster for the start of the regular season but did spend time on the active roster later in the season when backup
Marcus Mariota landed on Injured Reserve. However, Hartman never saw action in a regular season game and is still looking to make his NFL debut. With Mariota set to become a free agent in March, the Commanders have opted to bring Hartman back as QB insurance this offseason.

FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz reports that Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has decided to stay in D.C. for a second season despite drawing head-coaching interest around the league following an impressive turnaround that saw the Commanders go from four wins in 2023 to 12 wins in 2024 and an appearance in the NFC Championship game. Kingsbury's return will ensure continuity for the offense and for quarterback
Jayden Daniels after a remarkable rookie season. The former Arizona Cardinals head coach will surely be a top head-coach candidate again next year. The opportunity to continue working with one of the best young QBs in the game was just too hard to pass up. With Kingsbury running the offense in 2024, the Commanders ranked seventh in total offense (369.6 yards per game) and fifth in scoring (28.5 points per game). It's great news for Daniels' stock in 2025.
