Padres Working On Two-Year Deal With Mike Clevinger
4 years agoThe San Diego Padres and starting pitcher Mike Clevinger are working toward a two-year deal, according to league sources. It would buy out the last two years of arbitration for Clevinger, who is scheduled to become a free agent in 2022. The Friars acquired the right-hander from the Indians in August, and locking him up during his arbitration years would provide the team with more certainty as it pertains to his salary. Clevinger has a 2.96 ERA (152 ERA+) since the start of 2017, but he's been on the injured list three times in the last two years -- with an upper back strain and a left ankle sprain in 2019 and a right posterior elbow impingement this September. The 29-year-old isn't expected to need surgery on his arm this offseason, but he remains a high-risk, high-reward fantasy starter.
