Justin Upton Looks To Continue Power Streak
7 years agoLos Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton has hit at least 30 home runs in each of the last two seasons and will look to bring that power to Los Angeles for the whole season in 2018. Upton had 28 home runs in 125 games with the Tigers in 2017 and, while his batting average slumped to just .245 in 27 games with the Angels, he added another seven home runs with the Halos. The 35 home runs in 2017 were a career-high, as were his 44 doubles, 109 RBI, and .901 OPS. Upton inked a five-year extension with the Angels in the offseason, committing him to a middle of the lineup core with Mike Trout and new addition Shohei Ohtani. While his batting average slumped a bit with the Angels, his .273 seasonal batting average was his best since 2012. Upton also came just one steal short of his sixth season with at least 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases, a good sign after posting single digit stolen bases in three of his previous four seasons. The free swinging Upton matched the best walk rate (11.7%) of his career, which he also had in 2013 with the Braves, and his 41% hard hit ball rate matched a career-best in 2010 with Arizona. One thing that fantasy owners need to be wary about is that his HR/FB rate was at a career-best of 21.2% last season, but that number could also be attributed to his strong hard hit ball rate. Upton is a safe bet to top 25 home runs and double digit stolen bases in 2018 and, if he can approach 100 RBI again, would be a safe option as an OF2.
