No matter the occasion, there are always backup running backs on the waiver wire list.

This week, backups to the backup are even being considered. With the starter sidelined with an injury, some third-string runners are now one play away from a healthy workload.

Trevor Etienne Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups

Rostered: 3% of Leagues

Baller Move: Only Add In Very Deep Leagues

Rico Dowdle was more like Rico Wow-dle (I'll see myself out) against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The free-agent acquisition rushed for 206 yards on 23 attempts while filling in for Chuba Hubbard (calf). The heavy workload took its toll on Dowdle, who suffered from cramps and had to take himself out of the game on a couple of occasions. That opened the door for Trevor Etienne to get some touches.

Travis' brother didn't do anything overly impressive: four carries for 22 yards and one catch for seven. The 5.5 yards per carry could be carried over during an outstandingly soft upcoming schedule, that is, if Hubbard continues to miss games. Head coach Dave Canales says the starter is day-to-day this week. Once he's back, there are no touches available for Etienne.

Essentially, any fantasy manager who adds Etienne in a standard-sized league is hoping that Hubbard stays sidelined and Dowdle also misses time. That's the only way the rookie will see extensive work for the Panthers. He should only be added in the deepest of leagues.

Sean Tucker Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups

Rostered: 12% of Leagues

Baller Move: Only Add In Very Deep Leagues

One of fantasy football's hottest names a week ago will find himself back on the waiver wire in many leagues once again.

Tucker emerged as an interesting, speculative add when it was announced that starter Bucky Irving (foot/shoulder) would miss Week 5. The third-year pro totaled 192 yards in one game a season ago when given an opportunity, and Rachaad White, in theory, could keep the pass-catching role.

That theory was swiftly debunked. White received RB1 usage (18 touches for 71 yards) and scored twice against a Seattle defense that hadn't allowed a running back to score a rushing touchdown in the first month of the season. Tucker, on the other hand, logged negative yardage on six touches (three carries and catches).

Irving may miss another game with his various ailments, but White will retain the lead role as long as he remains healthy. Tucker, therefore, falls in the same category as Etienne. He'll have to jump White due to an injury to the latter to have fantasy success. If that ever happens, Irving could already be back in the lineup.

Tyjae Spears Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups

Rostered: 29% of Leagues

Baller Move: Add in 12 or 14-Team Leagues

Welcome back, Tyjae Spears.

The Titans running back made his season debut in Week 5 after a lengthy recovery from an ankle sprain. Spears was eased back into action, tallying four carries for 14 yards in the team's comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals. It's not what he's doing now that entices fantasy managers. It's what he can do.

Spears is often regarded as one of the league's highest-value backups. He's carried the load before and had success doing it. Tony Pollard was seeing the highest snap share (89%) and touch percentage (93%) of any running back in the league in the first four weeks. This is a two-person backfield. If one goes down, the other gets the vast majority of the opportunities.

Spears will get a piece of the pie when both backs are active, as well.

The one problem: The Tennessee offense is horrendous. Pollard hasn't made the most of his volume because the Titans are constantly playing behind the sticks and trailing on the scoreboard. The Titans average the fewest points in football (14.6). Even if Spears gets a full workload, it'll be tough sledding.
