ANALYSIS: The Chicago Cubs called up shortstop Luis Vazquez on Sunday, setting up the 24-year-old to make his major debut this Tuesday when the Atlanta Braves visit Wrigley Field.
The team's No. 13 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, received the call after hitting .262 with three homers, 11 RBI, 22 runs scored, and a stolen base over 141 at-bats at Iowa this season. Vazquez is expected to replace infielder Nico Hoerner (hamstring), who could be placed on the injured list
Vazquez hit a combined 20 homers between Double-A and Triple-A in 2023 but is more of a glove-first utilityman who can also play second and third. He will be an option for deeper leagues willing to bet Vazquez continues to tap into his power.
