RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - Sony Open

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the Sony Open. Here are some under-the-radar plays and picks for this week's event.

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for the fourth season.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - Sony Open

Joe Nicely - Marc Leishman

Alternate - Kevin Kisner

When you think of exciting golfers, Marc Leishman doesn’t exactly jump to the top of the list. While it would be fun to kick this year’s RotoBaller OAD contest off with an edgy, cool pick, I think I’ll get things rolling with one of the last golfers on the PGA Tour with a physique that resembles mine.

Leishman’s not flashy, but this week’s Waialae Country Club layout historically favors substance over style. The Sony Open is one of the last true safe havens on the PGA Tour schedule for the plodders, the poofers, and the dinkers-and-dunkers of the world. It suits the Big Aussie, a guy that would rather mow his lawn than measure his swing speed with a TrackMan.

Leishman has never missed a cut in 12 career starts in the Sony, logged three top-10s across five Swing Season starts, and carded 27 birdies last week at Kapalua. The big fella seems ready to me.

Spencer Aguiar - Corey Conners

Alternate - Si Woo Kim

So this is how I get rewarded for winning the RotoBaller OAD contest last season? The company decided to bring in Matt Miller and Owen Vrabel from DrawsNFades Podcast to try and take me out. In the words of the great Denzel Washington in 'Training Day,' "YOU THINK YOU CAN DO THIS TO ME?!"

I think there are a few routes that make logical sense. The first, and perhaps the most obvious, would be Webb Simpson. Three straight top-four finishes at Waialae, which is how I started my campaign in 2021. If I were playing in a contest with more participants, Si Woo Kim or Billy Horschel would be options I would highly consider, but I think I will be like a boxer that feels my competition out early - taking in all the information before putting myself in the pocket to strike.

There are a few reasons I believe Corey Conners is the perfect man for the job in week one, but I will keep it simple with two basic points. First off, the Canadian ranks number one in my model when it comes to my reconstructed proximity numbers to mimic the track, and perhaps more importantly, Waialae is where Conners has gained the most strokes putting in his career - doubling his output at any other venue. If the putter gets hot, we might be able to steal an early lead, but champions don't get excited early. We let the competition come to us.

Owen Vrabel - Sungjae Im

Alternate - Kevin Kisner

Keeping it simple stupid this week. Sungjae has a few years under his belt at the Sony Open with some relative success, posting a 16th in 2019 and 21st in 2020. This year, he gets the added benefit of playing last week at the TOC. We all know Sungjae is an iron man and loves playing in consecutive weeks. Expect him to keep rolling in birdies (23 last week with two eagles) and find himself inside the top-10 when all is said and done. These short par 70 tracks are quickly becoming his bread and butter. Look no further than his last few appearances at the RBC Heritage and the Wyndham Championship.

Matt Miller - Marc Leishman

Alternate - Billy Horschel

Marc Leishman has played this event every year since 2013, never missing a cut. He has four top-10 finishes at Waialae Country Club in that span, including a fourth-place finish just a year ago. When you talk about a horse for the course, Leishman certainly fits that mold. While a lot of golfers come into this week playing competitive golf for the first time in over a month, Leishman comes in off of a top-10 finish last week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. I expect him to keep that momentum going this week in the second leg of the Hawaiian swing.

Josh Bennett - Webb Simpson

Alternate - Corey Conners

I’m just going to get this pick out of the way right away this year. Last year we had fun seeing how long I could hold out NOT playing him, and the year before I tried to play him like 10 times. As a proud proponent of the “don’t overthink it” method, this pick is pretty easy for me. On a course that doesn’t require length to be dominant, Webb should be one of the first golfers to look at. You don’t need to look much farther than his history at this event either. Three top five finishes in a row here, three top 15 finishes in a row prior to that, and another top 20 finish before that. Expecting business as usual for Webb here with a great finish to start off the year that I will finally win this thing. Good luck in your race for 2nd boys.

Andrew Putters - Talor Gooch

Alternate - Sungjae Im

I’m starting off the year with the man atop the FedEx Cup Standings in Talor Gooch. He fired back-to-back 67s on the weekend at Kapalua, finishing 15th place while losing nearly 2.5 SG putting for the week. He had a great fall and has shown he has what it takes to get into the winner’s circle. I love his overall game, which should fit nicely at the Sony. Even though I believe this is the highest he has ever been priced on DraftKings, I would argue he might be the best value of the top tier pricing. It’s also probably worth a stab at 25-1 to win.
