Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon started the new campaign with a special achievement in Tuesday's 4-1 road victory over the Los Angeles Kings. He logged two even-strength assists in the contest, surpassing Joe Sakic for the most points in Avalanche history. MacKinnon has tallied 1,017 points (367 goals, 650 assists) in 871 career games with the Avalanche. With his pair of helpers in the second period, MacKinnon became the fifth player in history with at least six career multi-assist performances in season-opening contests. Before Tuesday night, MacKinnon already held the Avalanche's assists record, and he needs 25 markers to take the goals record off Sakic. We will likely see it happen this season, given that MacKinnon has scored at least 25 goals in seven of the last eight campaigns.--Taavi Pailk
