John Mateer Likely to Play Against Texas?
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (hand) is pushing to play in the Red River Shootout against Texas this weekend, and there is a belief that his return is possible, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. The Heisman Trophy candidate underwent hand surgery following the Week 4 win over Auburn, but he has reacted well to the procedure. Backup quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. started in the blowout win over Kent State last week following the team's bye. In four games this season, Mateer has completed over 67% of his passes for 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. He's added 190 yards and five scores as a runner. Needless to say, his availability in Week 7 is a significant storyline ahead of one of the sport's best rivalry games. Although Texas has had notable struggles, Mateer's status could determine who walks away with a victory on Saturday.
