Martin Perez Re-Signs With Red Sox
4 years agoVeteran left-hander Martin Perez agreed to a one-year, $5 million guaranteed deal to re-sign with the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, according to a source. The deal includes a club option for a second season in 2022. The 29-year-old southpaw went 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA in the shortened 2020 season with Boston. He was 10-7 with a 5.12 ERA with the Twins the year before in 2019. Before that, Perez spent seven seasons with the Rangers and posted double-digit wins three times. Boston initially made Perez a free agent when they declined his $6.85 option for the 2021 season. He's still on the right side of 30 until April 4, but Perez doesn't excite fantasy managers much with his 5.9 career K/9 in 988 2/3 innings over 169 starts. The Red Sox are hoping he can eat some innings in the rotation until Chris Sale (elbow) returns from Tommy John surgery. Perez shouldn't be owned in standard-sized leagues.
