Charlie Morton Wants To Keep Pitching?
4 years agoTampa Bay Rays right-handed starter Charlie Morton, who became a free agent on Friday when the team didn't pick up his 2021 option, is believed to want to continue his career. Last time he was a free agent he preferred to remain on the East Coast. Morton's 7.0 FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement over the last two seasons is the best mark among all free-agent starting pitchers, with Trevor Bauer in second place at 5.8. The veteran has also gone 7-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 61 1/3 career playoff innings, so he'll certainly be attractive for a team expected to contend in 2021. Morton finished third in the 2019 American League Cy Young race but struggled in the 2020 shortened season to the tune of a 4.74 ERA. Rays general manager Erik Neander said the team is open to re-signing Morton for another year.
