Paul Goldschmidt Could Land on the Injured List
Paul Goldschmidt (knee) was not available off the bench on Wednesday in the team's 4-1 loss to the Twins. He was unable to play after banging his right knee on the ground while catching a foul popup on Tuesday. Goldschmidt said, "I don't think it's anything long-term," but he was diagnosed with a low-grade knee sprain with inflammation. He could end up needing a quick trip to the injured list, according to several reports, but the hope would be that he's able to return fairly quickly, even if that becomes necessary. Ben Rice started at first base in Goldschmidt's absence on Wednesday, with Austin Wells getting the start behind the plate. Wells and Rice would likely be everyday players while Goldschmidt is out, although Cody Bellinger could also move to first to relieve the overcrowding in the outfield. With just a one-game lead over the Guardians for the final Wild Card spot, the Yankees can't afford to lose key players to injuries, so they'll hope Goldschmidt returns quickly.
