The Washington Nationals announced on Thursday that they designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment to make room on the active roster for outfielder Dylan Crews (oblique), who is returning from the 60-day injured list. Lowe gets the boot off the team's 40-man roster after hitting .216/.292/.373 on the year with 16 home runs, 68 RBI, 50 runs scored and one stolen base in 440 at-bats in his first year with the team. The 30-year-old left-handed slugger was acquired from the Texas Rangers in the offseason and just didn't work out the way Washington was hoping. Lowe's departure from the roster means that fellow left-handed slugger Josh Bell will be the primary option at first in D.C. moving forward. Lowe will most likely go unclaimed on waivers before electing for free agency, but he should latch on with another team before the end of the season.--Keith Hernandez
