ANALYSIS: The Philadelphia Phillies promoted right-handed pitching prospect Mick Abel to make his MLB debut in a spot-start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 18. The No. 8-ranked prospect in the system did not disappoint in this outing, as he tossed six shutout frames with nine punchouts. He did not serve up a free pass and allowed just five hits.

However, since Abel was promoted only to make a spot start, he was optioned back to Triple-A following this start. Given his impressive debut, Abel could be in the mix to return to Philadelphia sooner than expected.
He was tasked to replace Aaron Nola (ankle), who is still sidelined on the 15-day IL. While Taijuan Walker has now taken his spot in the rotation, he has allowed five runs over his last eight frames and could be in danger of shifting back to a long relief role. At Triple-A this season, Abel has also performed at a high level, boasting a 2.51 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP. Across 52 1/3 innings of work, Abel has struck out 59 batters and allowed 23 walks.
Fantasy managers in deep 12+ team formats should view Abel as a strong stash option. If Walker has another disappointing outing, Abel will likely receive a call to return to Philadelphia.
