Charlie Morton Designated for Assignment
Charlie Morton for assignment and selected righty Tanner Rainey from Triple-A Toledo. Morton made what will go down as his final start for Detroit on Friday and coughed up six earned runs on five hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings in a 10-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. That continued a ghastly September for Morton, whom opposing offenses have teed off on for 17 earned runs on 17 hits in 12 frames this month. As a result, the Tigers - who are suddenly in a tight race for the AL Central with the Cleveland Guardians - have decided to move on from the 41-year-old less than two months after acquiring him from the Baltimore Orioles at the July 31 trade deadline. Morton combined for 140 2/3 innings between the two teams this season and went 9-11 with a 5.89 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, 148 strikeouts, and 71 walks.
