David Montgomery's fantasy football start 'em, sit 'em picks for Week 17 (2023). Should you should start or sit David Montgomery for fantasy football lineups?
BALLER MOVE: Start in 12+ Team Leagues
POSITIONAL VALUE: RB3
ANALYSIS: Although usage has been a question week after week for the two-headed monster in Detroit's backfield, the Lions' coaching staff has been consistent in splitting carries between the two running backs. David Montgomery (89 carries and 10 receptions) has out-touched Jahmyr Gibbs (64 carries and 20 receptions) in five of the last six weeks.
While Gibbs has posted better fantasy totals of late, reaching the end zone five times in the last three games, Montgomery has still amassed 206 yards, a touchdown, seven receptions, and 40 receiving yards over that same stretch.
It's clear that Montgomery is no longer the workhorse in Detroit's backfield and fantasy owners shouldn't expect the totals he posted at the beginning of the season. The veteran has been losing touches to Gibbs in the red zone and has just three carries inside the 20-yard line, compared to Gibb's nine carries.
However, considering the fact the Cowboys' rush defense is middle of the pack and Montgomery will still be heavily involved in Detroit's offensive game plan, he can be inserted into your lineup this week.
Montgomery is a RB15 in our half-PPR consensus staff rankings.
