2026 Fantasy Football NFL Rookie News and Outlooks

Jordyn Tyson, WR, Arizona State

Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson (hamstring) won't take part in any on-field workouts or testing at this week's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, sources told Dane Brugler of The Athletic. Tyson continues to work his way back from a season-ending hamstring injury last year.

The former Sun Devil is considered one of the top playmakers at his position in this year's draft class, but his lingering hamstring injury could negatively affect his draft stock in April. In nine games played in his final collegiate season last year before his injury, Tyson caught 61 passes for 711 yards and eight touchdowns. The previous year, he had 75 catches for 1,101 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns in 12 games played. Tyson could be ready to perform on-field activities for scouts at Arizona State's pro day in March.

Ty Simpson, QB, Alabama

Former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson will throw at this week's NFL scouting combine, a source told Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. It will give Simpson, the consensus No. 2 QB in this year's draft behind presumptive No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, a chance to solidify his status as a first-round pick in 2026. In his first three years at Alabama, Simpson attempted 50 passes.

That number jumped to a league-high 475 passing attempts last year, and he finished the season with 3,567 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 15 games played. Depending on Simpson's pre-draft workouts/interviews, he could vault himself to the first half of the first round of the draft in April after establishing himself as the best QB in the SEC last year.

Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana

Projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza will not throw at the NFL scouting combine this week, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN. The Indiana quarterback will instead throw at the Hoosiers' pro day on April 1, when the school has multiple receivers that Mendoza wants to help showcase. The 22-year-old doesn't really need to do anything more at this point for the Las Vegas Raiders to be comfortable taking him with the first overall selection in the 2026 NFL draft.

On his way to leading Indiana to a perfect season and the national title in 2025, the Heisman Trophy winner threw for 3,535 yards and a league-high 41 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions in 16 games played. Mendoza also ran for 276 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground on 90 rushing attempts. He could have some ups and downs in his first year in the NFL with the rebuilding Raiders, but he will be the unquestioned top pick in all rookie-only dynasty drafts.

Garrett Nussmeier, QB, LSU

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier did not live up to preseason expectations in 2025, throwing for just 1,927 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions in nine games. However, the redshirt senior was dealing with abdominal and torso injuries that reportedly limited his core strength and mechanics. His 2024 season was far more productive, as the veteran tossed for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions after replacing Jayden Daniels in Baton Rouge. Once viewed as a potential top-20 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Nussmeier now has a third-round projection.

That said, the 2026 rookie quarterback class is lacking depth, as Indiana's Fernando Mendoza and Alabama's Ty Simpson appear to be the only first-round locks. Fresh off a Senior Bowl MVP appearance, Nussmeier could be pushed into the second round if he performs well during the pre-draft process.

If that happens, he should be expected to see starting playing time at some point in his first few seasons in the NFL. Four of the last five quarterbacks selected in Round 2 (Tyler ShoughWill LevisJalen Hurts, and Drew Lock) have had their shots at the starting role. If Nussmeier falls to Round 3 or 4, his chances to see the field early in his career diminish greatly.

Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love is almost unanimously considered the No. 1 prospect at the position in the 2026 NFL Draft class, and he's widely viewed as a top-five or fringe top-five overall player. Despite many draft analysts believing running backs shouldn't be selected in the top half of the first round, we have seen Ashton Jeanty (No. 6), Bijan Robinson (No. 8), and Jahmyr Gibbs (No. 12) come off the board that early just in the past three drafts.

After a monster junior season, Love is primed to be a top-10 pick in April's draft. In 12 games, the 20-year-old tallied 226 touches for 1,652 yards and 21 touchdowns despite sharing the backfield with Jadarian Price, who many view as the RB2 in the 2026 class. Love has adequate workhorse size at 214 pounds, and he's a crafty and dynamic runner and receiver. If Love is picked as early as expected, he figures to be a clear second-round pick in redraft leagues next season, and he has high-end RB1 upside in his career, if not from Day 1. Love is easily the No. 1 pick in upcoming single-QB rookies drafts.
