Should I Pickup Tez Johnson or Chris Godwin? Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 13

Chris Godwin - Fantasy Football Rankings, NFL Injuries, DFS

Should I pickup Tez Johnson or Chris Godwin as fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 13 of 2025? Read our fantasy football waiver wire outlooks.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have suffered many injuries to pass catchers and to their quarterback leading up to their Week 13 clash against the Arizona Cardinals.

Wide receiver Mike Evans broke his clavicle while going for a deep ball in Week 7, and fellow WR Jalen McMillan hurt his neck in the second preseason game. Things got more dire for the Bucs when QB Baker Mayfield left last week's game with a low-grade separated shoulder.

The good news is that Chris Godwin is back after missing time with a fractured fibula, and Tez Johnson has stepped up. Should you pick up Chris Godwin or Tez Johnson ahead of Week 13? Let's dive in.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Tez Johnson Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlook

After playing three seasons at Troy, Johnson transferred to Oregon, where he won MVP of the 2024 Big Ten Championship Game for the undefeated Ducks. In his best season, 2023, he recorded 86 catches for 1,182 yards, the fourth-most in the Pac-10, and ten receiving touchdowns.

Johnson was not expected to make an immediate impact in the NFL. He fell all the way to seventh round of the 2025 draft. But he had to step up when the Bucs suffered multiple injuries, including those to Evans, Godwin, and McMillan.

While he didn't make a catch until Week 4, Johnson had a breakout of sorts in Week 5, making four catches for 59 yards. He scored his first NFL touchdown the next week. So far this season, he has made 23 catches for 282 yards, and five touchdowns, and he's part of a rookie receiving core that is leading the league in major metrics compared to other rookies.

Although he lined up mostly in the slot at Oregon, Johnson has lined up out wide on 61.9% of his snaps this season. Chris Godwin has been a slot receiver for most of his career, but he is also lining up more out wide this season. The Bucs have to fit their many talented receivers where necessary with injuries impacting each week.

Chris Godwin Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlook

Chris Godwin has made one Pro Bowl and one All-Pro second team and might have made more if he could have stayed healthier. Unfortunately, he has only been able to play 16 or more games three times in his career. In the past one-and-a-half seasons, he has only played in 10 games.

When healthy, he has been an elite talent. Last season, he averaged 82.3 yards per game, his highest total since his 2019 Pro Bowl season, and scored five touchdowns in seven games.

This season, Godwin has only played in three games so far, and he hasn't gotten into a rhythm. After missing the first three weeks of the season with an ankle injury, he played in Weeks 4 and 5 and made identical stat lines of three catches for 26 yards in each game. He was on the field for between 77% and 81% of the team's snaps in those games.

A fractured fibula kept Godwin out from Week 6 until Week 12. In his return, he was targeted four times, making two catches for just nine yards. He only played 36% of the snaps. But coach Todd Bowles says they will "ramp up his usage" in Week 13, a home game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Should I Pickup Tez Johnson or Chris Godwin For Fantasy Football?

Godwin is risky to start this week. While the coaching staff says he'll be used more, we cannot be sure if that is just coaching speak. Even if he's on the field for more snaps, it's possible he faces lingering issues from the fibula.

Moreover, Johnson has been more productive. Johnson is second on the team with five receiving touchdowns, one behind his fellow rookie Emeka Egbuka. Johnson is averaging 28.2 yards per game, and 39.1 yards per game since Week 5.

Both receivers would be negatively impacted if Baker Mayfield (shoulder) misses the game. Mayfield's status for Week 13 is "uncertain," according to an article by Scott Smith, a senior writer for the Buccaneers' team website. An MRI showed a low-grade AC joint sprain, and it would be surprising if he was able to play.

The Cardinals defense is below average but is not one of the worst in the league. Arizona allows 222.8 passing yards per game, the 20th-fewest, and they allow the 19th-most fantasy points to WRs. Neither Godwin nor Johnson are ideal to start in Week 13, but if you have to start one, Johnson is the better choice.
