One and Done Selections - The Tour Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Sungjae Im
Alternate - Sungjae ain’t withdrawing
Mercifully, this OAD season is coming to an end. It’s the worst one I can ever remember having. My strategy of firing early with elite golfers DID NOT work. Note to self for 2024…
As we head to East Lake for the Tour Championship, I can’t win this contest and have few options, so I’ll roll with our South Korean King - Sungjae Im. It’s been a rather quiet summer for Sungjae, but he’s found something in recent weeks and logged consecutive top-seven finishes on what’s been some of his best statistical output from tee to green this year. He also has some nice history at East Lake, where he scored a runner-up result just a year ago.

Josh Bennett - Max Homa
Alternate - Lucas Glover
Nothing crazy for reasoning behind this pick. Only so many golfers left that I haven’t used, and Max is the best player I have that’s decently high up the starting strokes board. Glover is one stroke ahead of him, so I could use him instead, but I think Max has more firepower in his overall game than Glover does. He finished 5th last year, hopefully he can put on a similar show this year and chase down the guys in front of him.

Russell Henley has been brilliant over the past few months, and most have just caught up to the form he has possessed because of the three consecutive top-eight finishes. My model places him fifth in strokes gained tee-to-green over the past 24 rounds, which lands at the same exact number when running total weighted strokes gained to mimic East Lake over the past two seasons of data. His ability to make a real run up the leaderboard will come down to improving his par-five scoring, but there are a lot of par-four ranges this week where Henley was the best player in the field.
I love the idea of playing golfers in OAD that are further down the board because they have nothing to lose for the week.
