Rays Designate Hunter Renfroe For Assignment
4 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays designated outfielder Hunter Renfroe for assignment last Friday to help clear their 40-man roster for three young prospects. Renfroe appeared in 42 games last year (34 starts) during the shortened 2020 season and hit the first grand slam in Rays postseason history during the wild-card sweep of the Blue Jays. However, he hit just .156 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in his first year with the team. He started six of 12 games he played in the playoffs, hitting .174 with two long balls and seven RBI. The Rays also designated infielder/outfielder Brian O'Grady for assignment after he spent most of last season at the team's alternate site in Florida. The moves helped create room for outfielder Josh Lowe, right-handed pitcher Drew Strotman and infielder Taylor Walls.
