Jake Moody beat out
Greg Joseph in the kicker competition and is set to be the starter. Moody has gone 21-for-24 on kicks throughout training camp, compared to Joseph, who was slightly better at 22-for-24. The 2023 third-round pick has been disappointing so far in his career, making 76.3% of his career field goals. He struggled more in 2024, where he made only 70.6% of his kicks, which ranked fifth lowest among all kickers. He'll open the season with a favorable setup as the 49ers offense projects to be one of the best in football.

The Baltimore Ravens released kicker
John Hoyland on Saturday, leaving rookie
Tyler Loop as the lone kicker on the roster. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Loop is "kicking well enough to win the job." A sixth-round pick out of Arizona, Loop made 83.8% of his field goals and 98.4% of his extra-point attempts in 50 career college games. The 24-year-old is poised to fill the shoes of longtime Ravens kicker
Justin Tucker, who was released this offseason amidst multiple allegations of sexual misconduct after 13 years with the team. Baltimore could always bring in a veteran kicker later in the summer, so Loop will still need to perform throughout the preseason to hold the job.

Tyler Bass (pelvis) is still dealing with a pelvic issue that is holding him out of practice. After missing his second practice this week, Bills head coach Sean McDermott had mentioned that the pelvic injury shouldn't be a huge concern. However, if this issue were to keep Bass out of the Bills' preseason opener on Aug. 9 versus the New York Giants, they might have to sign another kicker to the roster. In 2024, Bass was outside of the top-eight kickers for the fantasy football season and projects to struggle kicking due to having only two indoor games all season. The veteran comes in as the 12th-ranked kicker in the latest RotoBaller draft rankings.

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a four-year contract extension on Wednesday with president of football operations/general manager John Schneider, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. The deal will keep Schneider around through the 2030 NFL draft and will take him through at least his 20th draft with the organization. Schneider has been Seattle's GM since the 2010 season and added the title of executive vice president in 2013. The 54-year-old also gained the title of president of football operations after former head coach Pete Carroll was fired after the 2023 season. The New York Jets signed free-agent kicker
Nick Folk to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday, according to head coach Aaron Glenn. The Jets waived kicker
Caden Davis on Tuesday, so Folk's primary competition for the kicking job in New York will be UFL standout
Harrison Mevis. The 40-year-old Folk will reunite with the Jets after kicking for them from 2010 to 2016. He spent the last two years with the Tennessee Titans and went 21-for-22 on his field-goal tries while making all 25 of his extra-point attempts in 14 games in 2024. As long as Folk doesn't really struggle or get injured in training camp and the preseason in his return to the Jets, he should be the favorite to win the job over Mevis. Heading into his 18th NFL season, Folk has a career 84.3% success rate on 479 field-goal attempts, including going 47-for-70 from 50-plus yards.

Buffalo Bills kicker
Tyler Bass (pelvis) is dealing with a pelvis injury that kept him sidelined at training camp practice on Monday, according to Bills beat writer Maddy Glab. It doesn't appear to be a serious injury for Bass, so he should be back in action at camp in a couple of days. The 28-year-old has been good but not great for fantasy purposes in his five seasons as the Bills' kicker. Bass went 24-for-29 on field-goal tries and 59-for-64 on his extra points in 2024 in 17 regular-season games. He has made anywhere from 24 to 28 field goals in all five of his seasons in Buffalo. Bass is in one of the best offenses in the league, but the Bills have been so efficient at punching it into the end zone that his fantasy ceiling has remained low. Still, if you wait at the position in fantasy drafts, you could do much worse than Bass as a low-end starting option in 12-team leagues.

Evan McPherson converted all six of his field-goal attempts on Sunday to continue a spotless training camp. McPherson is off to an 18-for-18 start this summer as he looks to leave an underwhelming 2024 season behind him. After beginning his career with a productive three-year run, McPherson went backward last season in making just 16 of 22 field goals (72.7%), though he did knock in all but one of his 38 extra-point tries. The 26-year-old missed the Bengals' final five games because of a groin injury, but he has bounced back nicely from it so far. As part of a team with a high-powered offense, McPherson should get plenty of opportunities this year. He's RotoBaller's eighth-ranked kicker heading into the 2025 campaign.

Dallas Cowboys kicker
Brandon Aubrey (shoulder) made five of his six field-goal tries into the wind during training camp practice on Thursday, per Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News. It's notable that Aubrey is practicing early on in training camp this summer after he had surgery on his shoulder in the offseason. The 30-year-old should be a full-go for the start of the regular season and should be considered one of the top fantasy kicking options going into his third year with Dallas. Aubrey has been a Pro Bowler in both of his first two NFL seasons and is coming off a 2024 in which he made 40 of a league-high 47 field-goal attempts, including a long of 65, in 17 regular-season games. He also made all 30 of his extra-point attempts. RotoBaller has Aubrey ranked as the top fantasy kicker.

Greg Joseph appear to be in a legitimate competition for the starting gig this fall. The two kickers are off to a strong start as they combined to go 8-for-8 on kicks during Wednesday's practice. They also both managed to knock down kicks from around 55 yards. Moody was selected 99th overall by the 49ers in 2023, but experienced a sophomore slump last season. He missed 10 field goal attempts and one extra point, which prompted the 49ers to bring in some competition. Joseph is a veteran kicker who has been around the league quite a bit. Last season, he knocked down 16-of-20 field goal attempts in eight games between three teams. Whoever wins this job should be worth rostering in fantasy leagues because it'll probably be a high-volume job.

Dustin Hopkins will "get every opportunity" to rebound from a down year in 2024, according to Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal. Hopkins had an excellent year in 2023 when he made 33 of his 36 kicks, including all eight attempts from beyond 50 yards. He was significantly worse in 2024, going just 18-27 overall and four-for-eight from 50+ yards out. Easterling notes that Hopkins' primary competition in Browns' camp is

The NFL Players Association is not expected to engage in formal negotiations with the league and its owners on a potential 18-game regular season until at least early next year, according to people familiar with the deliberations. It makes it unclear on when an 18-game season could be implemented, according to The Washington Post's Mark Maske. The union could be in position to launch formal negotiations with the NFL and its owners after its annual meeting of player representatives in March. Some owners had hoped to have an 18-game season as early as 2027 or 2028, but it might be unrealistic to expect that to happen in 2027. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and other league leaders have not pressed the union to begin negotiations. When formal negotiations do begin, they could be contentious, as many of the players already think a 17-game season is too long.

The NFL informed teams that for the second straight year, they will not hold a supplemental draft this summer, sources told The Athletic. The supplemental draft is an option for draft-eligible players who did not declare for the regular NFL draft in the spring for various reasons. The supplemental draft was last held in 2023 with two eligible prospects, but neither was selected. A player hasn't been taken in the supplemental draft since 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals took defensive back Jalen Thompson. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that the Cleveland Browns have signed free-agent placekicker
Andre Szmyt to a one-year, $840,000 contract. Szmyt was on Cleveland's roster this offseason until the team waived him earlier in the month. However, he's back now with the release of defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo earlier in the day. The Syracuse product has yet to attempt a kick on an NFL field but will compete with veteran teammate
Dustin Hopkins for the Browns' starting job. In college, Szmyt was 85-for-105 (81%) on field-goal attempts and hit extra-point tries at a stellar 98% clip.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Hamilton County agreed to principle terms for a new lease that will keep the Bengals in Cincinnati playing home games at Paycor Stadium through June of 2036, with 10 additional option years that could extend the lease through June of 2046. Included in the agreement is an approach to modernize the 25-year-old stadium that will be a $470 million renovation project. The Bengals will invest $120 million into the renovation project, which will cover 75 percent of new improvements to the stadium. It's a big win for the Bengals franchise as they look to get back to the Super Bowl in 2025 with one of the best offenses in the league.

Free-agent kicker
Justin Tucker received a 10-game suspension from the NFL on Thursday, according to league insider Ian Rapoport. The eight-time All-Pro was released by the Baltimore Ravens this offseason after allegations of sexual misconduct by numerous accusers. The 35-year-old suspension will begin on the NFL's roster cutdown day (August 26), and he will be eligible for reinstatement following Week 10 of the 2025 campaign (November 11). His suspension can be served whether he is with a team or not. Tucker is one of the best kickers in NFL history, but the off-the-field developments are sure to negatively impact his legacy and his chances to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the future.
