Charlie Morton A Hot Free-Agent Commodity
4 years agoAt least eight to 10 teams have already expressed some level of interest in free-agent starting pitcher Charlie Morton, who became a free agent when the Tampa Bay Rays declined his $15 million option for 2021 on Oct. 30. The soon-to-be 37-year-old is believed to be seeking a one-year contract, possibly with an option for 2022. Morton prefers to return to Tampa, but industry insiders think they are unlikely to offer more than $10 million. The Mets and Yankees are in need of rotation help and could swoop in. The right-hander's willingness to accept a short-term deal will make him attractive to a number of clubs. He went 2-2 with a 4.74 ERA in nine starts last year while missing around three weeks with right shoulder inflammation. Morton was third in the American League Cy Young voting in 2019 when he went 16-6 with a 3.05 ERA in 33 starts.
