Favorite Plays
Hideki Matsuyama ($8,800)
Any article you read this week or podcast you listen to will discuss how TPC Southwind is a complete tee-to-green test that rewards a ball-striking nature. That isn't going to be any different here since nine of the last 13 winners at this course have led the field tee-to-green during their victory. However, what is getting lost in the shuffle is how names like Hideki Matsuyama and Justin Thomas have previously excelled at similar courses, including winning here in the last five years, but aren't being talked about in the same breath as the other favorites.
Hideki's approach play and around-the-green game have averaged 7.675 strokes over his last four tournaments, so it just comes down to a driver that has faltered in the previous four months. That concern isn't lost on me since losing in each start does present issues when water accompanies the property. That said, Matsuyama's fourth-place grade OTT at TPC tracks and 21st overall projection at this course is the exact blueprint Thomas also brings and why both continue to excel at this track yearly.
Akshay Bhatia ($7,000)
While I prefer Akshay Bhatia on Poa greens when we are trying to talk about safety, there has secretly been an upside that has seeped through the cracks when the American has been on quick Bermuda and easy-scoring courses that may still present danger but equally reward opportunities created.
All markets are lower on Bhatia than they should be this week. Even if safety concerns are valid, it's worth noting that this is a no-cut event, meaning it only takes one day of upside to compensate for the $7,000 price tag fully.
Lucas Glover ($7,000)
There is no fluke behind Lucas Glover's win and third-place result at TPC Southwind during his last two starts.
Glover's missed-cut performance at the Wyndham might turn some people off of him in Memphis, but the ball-striking returns last week were good enough to warrant a made cut for someone who had churned out three top-23 finishes in a row before that mishap.
Maverick McNealy ($7,500)
I used Pebble Beach as a comp course that I looked into this week. I know that isn't the most common answer that you might think when diving into TPC Southwind, but I liked the corollary between the small green complexes and overall grade of "Putts Per GIR."
Names like Jason Day, Wyndham Clark and Maverick McNealy have excelled in that area in the past, and I do think we have some meat left on the bone for McNealy, who has been solid over the last few months.
