Cardinals Decline Kolten Wong's 2021 Option
Kolten Wong's $12.5 million option on Wednesday, making him a free agent. The 30-year-old will receive a $1 million buyout. The first-round pick in 2011 made his major league debut in 2013 and has been with the Cardinals for eight seasons. The left-handed hitter batted .265 with a home run and 16 RBI in 53 games during the shortened 2020 season. Wong won his first Gold Glove last year and is a finalist again this season. General manager John Mozeliak said the team isn't ruling out a return for Wong down the road. He hit .285 with 11 home runs, 59 RBI and a career-high 24 steals in 2019. If he does not return to St. Louis, Tommy Edman will have a shot to lock down the keystone himself in 2021.
