Is Max Meyer a fantasy baseball waiver wire stash? Joey discusses the fantasy baseball outlook for Max Meyer in re-draft leagues for the rest of the 2024 season.
Miami Marlins' No. 2 prospect, Max Meyer, surely has a bright future ahead of him in the majors. Meyer showed some of his potential earlier in the year when he started the season with the big league club.
However, MLB Pipeline's No. 81 overall prospect was optioned down to Triple-A after just three starts as the team monitors his innings in 2024. The 25-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery during the 2022 campaign, which caused him to miss most of that season and the entire 2023 season.
So, will Meyer find his way back up to the majors this year? Should fantasy managers stash him in redraft formats? Let's dive in and find out.
Max Meyer 2024 Stats
When the Marlins optioned Meyer down to Triple-A Jacksonville on April 14, it was a move that shocked a lot of fantasy owners. The right-hander had a 2.12 ERA and 14 strikeouts through his first three outings, which included six innings of one-run ball against the Atlanta Braves on April 13.
But, in the grand scheme of things, it was a move that was always going to happen for Meyer. Coming back from Tommy John surgery meant that the Marlins were going to be careful with their young starter. That has surely been the case for the right-hander in Triple-A so far, as he has thrown four innings or less in every start since being optioned.
Skip Schumaker on Max Meyer being optioned:
‘Peter laid out the game plan on that with Max’
Sounds like Skip is distancing himself from this one. Sensible man.

Despite struggling with a 6.46 ERA across those nine starts, it's hard to ignore what Meyer did in his first three outings with the Marlins in 2024. He gave up two runs or less in all three of his starts while walking just three batters.
Should I Stash Max Meyer In Redraft Leagues?
It remains to be seen when the Marlins will bring Meyer back up to the active roster. It is safe to say, though, that he will eventually be called up. For that reason, the 25-year-old is worth a stash in most 12-plus team leagues.

Meyer looked great in his first three starts in 2024, and assuming he is with the team for the remainder of the year when he eventually gets called up, his upside will be key for fantasy managers. He held opposing hitters to a .180 average in those three outings while having a 0.82 WHIP. Hold onto him now because there's a chance that he will turn into a league winner down the stretch.
