Yankees Designate Diego Castillo For Assignment
11 months agoThe New York Yankees designated infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo for assignment on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for left-hander Matt Gage, who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros. Castillo could be on the move soon to another organization after the Yankees claimed him off waivers this offseason. The 26-year-old Venezuelan only had one at-bat in one game for the Arizona Diamondbacks at the major-league level in 2023, but he went 54-for-262 (.206) with 11 home runs and 29 RBI in his first 96 big-league contests in his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022. He did look better at Triple-A Reno last year, slashing .313/.431/.419 with an .840 OPS, three homers, 72 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 124 games, but he'll most likely serve as minor-league utility depth for whichever teams he sticks with for the start of spring training.
