Rockies Call Up Drew Romo
4 months agoThe Colorado Rockies selected the contract of 22-year-old catching prospect Drew Romo from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday after they released veteran Elias Diaz. Romo was the 35th overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft out of The Woodlands (Texas) High School. Per MLB Pipeline, Romo is the club's No. 9 prospect. He will get his first call to the big leagues after hitting .297 (102-for-343) with 14 home runs, 60 RBI and 51 runs scored in 85 games for Albuquerque in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. The switch-hitting youngster isn't starting on Friday in the series opener at Coors Field against the division-rival San Diego Padres, but he should split playing time for the out-of-contention Rockies down the stretch with Jacob Stallings now that Diaz is no longer around. He's been better from the left side of the plate, but he'll need to show better plate discipline to succeed at the big-league level.
