The Milwaukee Brewers announced on Tuesday that they sent first baseman
Rhys Hoskins (thumb) on a minor-league rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville. Hoskins is attempting to return from a Grade 2 left-thumb sprain and could rejoin the big-league roster as soon as this weekend if he avoids setbacks in the minors this week. However, the 32-year-old veteran has been sidelined since July 7, so it's also possible the Brew Crew want Hoskins to go on a little bit longer of a rehab assignment.
Andrew Vaughn has been a nice under-the-radar pickup for Milwaukee and has been thriving with his change of scenery, so it's possible that Hoskins is involved in more of a platoon at first base when he's back with the Brewers. In his second year with the team, Hoskins was hitting .242 (65-for-269) with 12 homers, 42 RBI and 30 runs in 82 games before his injury.

Jackson Chourio (hamstring) is completing baserunning, hitting and defensive work without issues and will start a minor-league rehab assignment on Friday with Triple-A Nashville, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Chourio has missed the last few weeks with a right-hamstring strain, but it's possible he'll come off the 10-day injured list early next week if he's able to avoid any setbacks with the Sounds this weekend. The 21-year-old has been out since late July. Chourio is one of the best young power/speed threats in the outfield in baseball and will give the red-hot, first-place Brewers a big boost when he returns. He was hitting .276/.311/.474 with 17 homers, 67 RBI, 71 runs and 18 steals in 445 at-bats before his injury.
Blake Perkins and
Brandon Lockridge will split center-field duties until Chourio returns.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman
Nolan Arenado (shoulder) will rejoin the club in Miami on Tuesday, but he's not ready to come off the 10-day injured list. Arenado, who has been rehabbing from a right-shoulder strain at the Cardinals' spring training complex in Florida, is set to meet with team doctors to get a clearer picture of his recovery timeline. The eight-time All-Star went on the IL on Aug. 1 after slumping to a .235/.294/.366 line with 10 homers, 43 RBI, and 43 runs scored in 394 plate appearances. Arenado ranks in the league's 15th percentile or worse in hard-hit rate, average exit velocity, and xwOBA, which doesn't provide much hope for a turnaround if he does come back this year.

The Cleveland Guardians will promote left-handed pitching prospect
Parker Messick from Triple-A Columbus to make his debut Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Guardians Prospective. A second-round pick from Florida State in 2022, Messick has held his own during his first Triple-A action this season. Across 20 starts and 98 2/3 innings, the 24-year-old has posted a 3.47 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP, 119 strikeouts, and 42 walks. MLB Pipeline ranks Messick 12th among Guardians prospects and notes that he has "a high floor as at least a back-of-the-rotation starter." With Cleveland having optioned lefty
Joey Cantillo on Sunday, Messick could have a shot at sticking in the rotation if he pitches well against the Diamondbacks.

Cincinnati Reds left-hander
Wade Miley (forearm) is weighing his next move after visiting Dr. Timothy Kremchek on Monday. Miley, who was pulled off his rehab assignment after feeling soreness in his first Double-A outing last Friday, has been on the 15-day injured list since June 17 because of a flexor strain. It's unclear whether Miley's recent setback will lead to surgery, but manager Terry Francona said the Reds will "support whatever he does." The 38-year-old has made just three appearances (two starts) with Cincinnati this season and logged a 6.75 ERA with a 1.75 WHIP and 7:6 K:BB in 12 innings. It appears unlikely that he'll return in 2025.

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher
Gabriel Moreno (finger) is on the verge of returning from the 60-day injured list. He'll catch back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday during his Triple-A rehab assignment, and if all goes well, the Diamondbacks will activate him. The club has gone without the 25-year-old since June 14 as a result of a hairline fracture in his right index finger. Before suffering the injury, Moreno hit .270/.324/.414 with five homers, 20 RBI, and 29 runs scored in 188 plate appearances.
James McCann, who signed with the Diamondbacks after Moreno's injury, and
Jose Herrera have been doing most of the catching in Moreno's absence.

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher
Robbie Ray earned his 10th win of the season with 6 2/3 strong innings on Monday night at Petco Park. Ray finished with six strikeouts and gave up three hits and three runs in his team's 4-3 win. All three of the runs were unearned. The bullpen finished the job, though, getting the last seven outs of the game without allowing San Diego to tie the game. The win improves Ray's record to 10-6 on the year with a 2.85 ERA, 3.75 FIP, and 158 strikeouts in 154 2/3 innings. His workload is especially impressive after totaling only 34 innings in the last two seasons combined due to injuries. Ray is scheduled for his second start of the week on Saturday in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

Heliot Ramos went yard off
Nestor Cortes to start Monday night's 4-3 win over the Padres. Ramos finished the game 2-for-5 with his solo homer, a single, and three strikeouts. He's hitting .267 on the season with 15 homers and a .327 wOBA. For the most part, this season is on par with his breakout performance last year, although his power numbers are down, while his runs scored production is slightly up. The home run was his first since July 5 and snapped a 34-game homerless drought. During that span, he's struggled a bit, hitting only .250 with a .274 wOBA. He took some heat on social media for some comments about the Giants' fans over the weekend, but he made them and his fantasy managers happy with his contributions on Monday.

Brayan Rocchio stepped up as an unlikely hero on Monday night, providing his team with a critical two-run homer in their 3-1 win in Arizona. His two-run blast came in the fifth inning against
Zac Gallen and was just his third homer of the season. He has hit .237 with a .280 wOBA, which will establish a new career best if he can maintain it through the end of the season. In August, Rocchio is hitting .315 with a pair of homers and a .355 wOBA. Normally known for his defense, the 24-year-old is starting to be a middle-infield option in mixed leagues with his strong performance this month. The Guardians are three games back of the three teams tied for the three Wild Card spots, and they'll be counting on young hitters like Rocchio to step up as they try to stay in the playoff race down the stretch.

C.J. Kayfus hit his second homer in the majors on Monday night to help the Guardians claim a 3-1 victory in their series opener against the Diamondbacks. Kayfus started the scoring with his home run off
Zac Gallen in the second inning and finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI. Kayfus is hitting .239 with his two homers, two stolen bases, and a .319 wOBA in his 15 games in the majors. Before his promotion, he hit .300 in 86 games in the minors, totaling 14 homers, four stolen bases, and a .408 wOBA between Double-A and Triple-A. The 23-year-old has been splitting time between first base and the outfield and is looking to establish himself as a key part of the Guardians' young core going forward. He has decent power upside and a little speed, and he could emerge as a strong mixed league pickup if he keeps trending up down the stretch.

The 21-year-old has struck out in 32.1% of plate appearances, but his loud contact and raw power are already flashing against minor league pitching. Ranked as the club's No. 8 prospect, Petry offers intriguing upside with outfield and first base versatility. Arizona Diamondbacks pitching prospect Daniel Eagen has been promoted to Double-A after earning Northwest League Player of the Week honors. The 6'4" right-hander owns a fastball touching 96 mph with a sharp curve and mid-80s slider. In 19 starts at High-A, Eagen delivered a 2.49 ERA, 34.1% strikeout rate, and 10.6% walk rate. A 2024 third-round pick out of Presbyterian College, Eagen is quickly becoming a dynasty name to monitor. His swing-and-miss arsenal gives him mid-rotation upside, and continued success could push him onto the fast track toward Arizona.
