Samuel Basallo Inks an Eight-Year Extension With the Orioles
Samuel Basallo and the organization are finalizing an eight-year, $67 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Basallo, who just turned 21, is one of the best prospects in baseball, and less than a week after being called up, he has a long-term deal, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports. Basallo, who was recently called up to the big leagues on August 17, is the ninth-best prospect in all of baseball according to MLB top-100 prospects, and through just four games with the Orioles, has already agreed to an eight-year extension and been locked up long-term. Basallo has the upside to be one of the better hitters in baseball; he possesses game-changing power and excellent bat-to-ball skills, which enable him to drive the ball to all fields with elite exit velocities. In his 14 MLB at-bats, he is slashing .286/.333/.357 with five RBI. In Triple-A this year, he slashed .270/.377/.589 with 23 homeruns, 49 runs scored, and 67 RBI. While his defense is a work in progress, the Orioles have decided to lock him in long-term early in his career. Once the deal is completed, it will take effect next season and include a club option. Basallo ranks as a top-five catcher in dynasty formats.
