Joey Votto Uncertain If He'll Be Ready For Spring Training
Joey Votto (shoulder) is unsure if he'll be ready for spring training, which begins in about six weeks, after he had surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder and damage to his bicep nearly five months ago. Votto has taken swings in a batting cage recently, but his shoulder isn't fully recovered. The 39-year-old veteran is also entering the last guaranteed year of his contract. He's owed $25 million in 2023 and has a $20 million club option with a $7 million buyout for 2024. Votto had the worst offensive season in his career in 2022 while playing through his shoulder injury, with a career-low .205 average, 11 home runs, 41 RBI and a .319 on-base percentage in 91 games. He's expected to be the everyday first baseman in 2023 when he's healthy, but it's anyone's guess when that will be.
