Joey Votto Uncertain If He'll Be Ready For Spring Training
2 years agoCincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (shoulder) is unsure if he'll be ready for spring training, which begins in about six weeks, after he had surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder and damage to his bicep nearly five months ago. Votto has taken swings in a batting cage recently, but his shoulder isn't fully recovered. The 39-year-old veteran is also entering the last guaranteed year of his contract. He's owed $25 million in 2023 and has a $20 million club option with a $7 million buyout for 2024. Votto had the worst offensive season in his career in 2022 while playing through his shoulder injury, with a career-low .205 average, 11 home runs, 41 RBI and a .319 on-base percentage in 91 games. He's expected to be the everyday first baseman in 2023 when he's healthy, but it's anyone's guess when that will be.
