Carlos Asuaje Reaches Base Four Times
San Diego Padres second baseman Carlos Asuaje reached base in all four plate appearances, scoring two runs in Thursday’s victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Asuaje was a jolt for the sputtering Padres offense, recording a triple, single and two walks. Prior to his call-up on July 1, the 26-year-old infielder was slashing .338/.408/.492 in Triple-A El Paso. Asuaje is 5-for-7 with a 4:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio since his return. The Padres have been getting minimal production from second baseman Jose Pirela (.658 OPS, -0.6 WAR) and Asuaje deserves more opportunities to test the sustainability of his improved plate approach. For now, consider him a fantasy long shot but if he continues getting on base, Asuaje could be a keystone candidate in deep and NL-only leagues.
