Cardinals Designate Moises Gomez For Assignment
11 months agoThe St. Louis Cardinals designated outfielder Moises Gomez for assignment on Monday to make room for first baseman/outfielder Alfonso Rivas on the 40-man roster after they claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Gomez, a 25-year-old Venezuelan right-handed hitter, has yet to make his debut in the big leagues. In 131 games for Triple-A Memphis last year, he hit .232/.293/.457 with 30 home runs, 20 doubles, three triples, 79 RBI, five stolen bases and 77 runs scored in 567 trips to the plate. Gomez has 124 career home runs in eight minor-league seasons, but he's also struck out 887 times in 715 games, including a career-high 180 punchouts in 2023. Gomez could draw interest from other teams for his power, but if he goes unclaimed, he could return to the Cardinals organization and begin the 2024 season at Memphis.
