C.J. Beathard To Start Against Cardinals
4 years agoSan Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that quarterback C.J. Beathard will start under center in Week 16 against the division-rival Cardinals. Nick Mullens (elbow) will be out with an elbow injury that could require Tommy John surgery. With Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), who remains on Injured Reserve, unlikely to play again this season, the Niners signed former first-rounder Josh Rosen off the Buccaneers practice squad and added him to their active roster for depth behind Beathard. Beathard has appeared in four games in 2020 and has completed 62.2 percent of his 45 passing attempts for 332 yards and two touchdowns. The 27-year-old went 5-for-7 for 71 yards and a touchdown in place of Mullens last week against Dallas. The Niners are limping to the finish line. Beathard will be nothing more than a low-end desperation QB2 for the final two weeks of the season.
