William Byron LESS Than 47.5 Points
There are some numbers that will drive experts and fans crazy. Here is something from the past several editions of the Watkins Glen race. William Byron has issues finishing late. Worse, when he starts in the top five, he does not end up there. Not all of that is Byron's fault. The Hendricks Motorsports Racing team has run well but not enough.
Now, that point total carries much risk because of Byron's ability to turn in some fast laps or even lead some laps. However, that place differential specter can be scary. Let's risk the LESS here on Sunday.
Chris Buescher MORE Than 33.5 Points
Consider Chris Buescher's average start 13.0 at Watkins Glen of late. On Sunday afternoon, he begins in 13th. Over the past four races, the Ford has done well enough. More importantly, he managed a ninth last year without a very good car late. He still was close to the top-five during the final laps.
Now, Buescher will not be content with a playoff spot. He is going to go for a top-ten on Sunday and that plays well into ending up with more than 33.5 points. Take the MORE.
Joey Logano MORE Than 27.5 Points
The goal is to go for the Ford car here. Logano might even finish as the top Ford when all is said and done. It would not take much. After all, he did finish third at Watkins Glen last year. Even in 2021, Logano was one of the better cars out there before disaster struck. So, good speed is not a fluke.
The Team Penske Ford managed to qualify 11th as the second fastest Ford. Again, place differential is not needed here. If Logano stays around the top ten, that is more than enough. Take the MORE here.
Martin Truex Jr. MORE Than 46.5 Points
It is crazy but taking a shot at Martin Truex Jr. to run well late at Watkins Glen is not too far-fetched. After all, Truex Jr. has shown some err just enough late speed to accumulate some nice place differential very late in races. Aside from last year's disaster, Truex Jr. and his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota has finished seventh or better in five previous appearances.
Now, can the No. 19 Toyota do it one more time on Sunday? The answer feels like yes as Truex Jr. wants to clinch the regular season points title. Take the MORE anyway.
Chase Elliott Less Than 50.5 Points
Chase Elliott probably should have won last week at Indianapolis but it was not meant to be as he ended up second. Something seemed off with the No. 9 car in qualifying as he ended up 15th. Yes, Elliott can move up positions, but can he get close enough to the front? That does not feel so certain.
It can prove to be a high-risk move to doubt Elliott here. He did finish second in 2021 after starting 11th. The problem is 15th may be too tough a hill to climb. Run with the LESS.
