Fantasy Football Quarterback Player Outlooks

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

Not even quarterback Bo Nix's biggest supporters could have predicted the extent of success that he'd have in his first year with the Denver Broncos after they selected him 12th overall in the 2024 NFL draft. The Oregon product got off to a slow start early on before coming on strong in head coach Sean Payton's offense to finish with 3,775 passing yards, 29 touchdowns (second-most all time by a rookie QB), and 12 interceptions in 17 regular-season games to lead the Broncos to their first playoff appearance since 2016.

He added 92 rushing attempts for 430 yards and four TDs to finish as the QB8 in fantasy. What's even more impressive is that Nix was able to accomplish all of that with a lackluster ground game. Nix will need to be more efficient in Year 2 to take the next step, but his rushing upside gives him a safer floor at the position as at least a low-end fantasy QB1, and he should be even more comfortable in Payton's offense.

The Broncos added veteran tight end Evan Engram, who could be a reliable No. 2 target behind WR1 Courtland Sutton. If Denver's rushing attack improves on the shoulders of rookie RJ Harvey and J.K. Dobbins, Nix could be even more dangerous. RotoBaller has Nix ranked as the No. 8 fantasy QB.

Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2024 was the year of all years for Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. He set career highs in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completion percentage, and quarterback rating. Mayfield would finish 2024 as the overall QB4. It was nice to see him finally meet expectations as a former number one overall pick.

As we turn the page to 2025, we must acknowledge that Mayfield played at a level we had never seen from him before in 2024. His 41 touchdown passes tied for second in the league, and his 7.2% touchdown rate blew past his career mark of 5.0%. As much fun as it was seeing Mayfield hit his ceiling, he is a major regression candidate for 2025. Due to his monster 2024, Mayfield is one of the first quarterbacks coming off draft boards. He has an average NFFC ADP of 48.68 overall.

That feels steep for a player who is likely to regress to his career means across the board. Mayfield is certainly a better real-life quarterback than many fantasy gamers thought, but he's a fade at his current price in drafts.

- Dave Ventresca

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

Caleb Williams' rookie season can look different depending on the lens through which you view it. On one hand, Chicago sported one of the worst offensive fronts in the league last season, with the former first-round pick getting sacked a league-leading 68 times – 16 more than the next quarterback on the list, C.J. Stroud. On the other hand, Williams didn't do himself any favors, routinely holding onto the ball for too long and sporting a dreadful catchable-ball rate.

He compiled 3,541 yards and a 20:6 TD: INT ratio across 562 pass attempts (62.5% completion percentage), chipping in 489 scoreless rushing yards and fumbling 10 times, losing half of them. Objectively, that's far superior to 2023 first overall selection Bryce Young's rookie campaign. Williams indeed bolstered a better arsenal of weaponry than Young, but that will be the case again with rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III and tight end Colston Loveland joining a loaded offense.

Additionally, Chicago sunk a ton of resources into their offensive line and hired one of the best offensive minds of recent years, Ben Johnson, as their head coach. DJ Moore is still in his prime, and some expect big things from second-year wideout Rome Odunze, while veteran tight end Cole Kmet should still be a fine contributor. Things are looking up for Williams heading into 2025, but Chicago's success will hinge on his development as a starting quarterback. He garners sneaky rushing upside as RotoBaller's QB11.

- Alex Ciulla

Justin Fields, New York Jets

Justin Fields began the 2024 season as the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback. Despite having a 4-2 record to open the season, Pittsburgh opted to bench Fields in favor of veteran Russell Wilson. Not surprisingly, Fields spurned Pittsburgh in free agency and opted to sign a two-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets. Whether he is the team's long-term quarterback solution is very much up in the air. For now, Fields is set to begin the 2025 season as New York's QB1.

He showed last year that he still carries plenty of upside for fantasy football purposes. Fields averaged 19.5 fantasy points per game in his six starts and finished as a QB1 three times during that span. This was in large part due to his ability as a rusher. The new Jets regime has made it clear they want to fully incorporate Fields' legs into its offense. One thing working against Fields is that it's unclear how long a leash he'll have if the team starts losing games. One thing is for certain. As long as Fields is starting, he's a viable fantasy football QB1.

- Dave Ventresca

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans

Houston Texans' quarterback C.J. Stroud led his team to a playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024, but the campaign was still considered a bit of a sophomore slump after Stroud's breakout rookie season. He regressed in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and threw seven more interceptions than he did as a rookie.

Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik was let go, replaced by Nick Caley, who comes from the Rams' organization. Stroud's receiver room got a major boost in the form of Iowa State rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, along with sure-handed veteran Christian Kirk coming over from Jacksonville.

The offensive line is retooled as well. It will be a new-look offense in Houston for Stroud's third season, and he should be in a much better situation in 2025 than he was in 2024. Stroud is currently going off the board as QB17, which is right around where he finished in what was considered a bad season in 2024. He is a great target for fantasy managers who choose to wait at quarterback rather than take one of the top available options.
