Is Philip Rivers Starting This Week? Should I Pick Up/Start Rivers for Fantasy Football Week 15?

Philip Rivers - Fantasy Football Rankings, Waiver Wire Pickups, NFL DFS Prop Picks

Is Philip Rivers starting this week and playing in Week 15? Should I pickup and start Philip Rivers for fantasy football? Read the latest fantasy football updates.

The Indianapolis Colts are dealing with major injuries at the QB position. Last weekend, their starting QB, Daniel Jones, suffered an Achilles injury, which will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

In addition, the team's No. 2 option, Anthony Richardson Sr., is currently on the IR due to an orbital injury. Their No. 3 option, Riley Leonard, was also dealing with a knee injury but is expected to be active on Sunday.

Due to these injuries, the Colts opted to sign retired NFL QB Philip Rivers to the active roster after he spent the week with the practice squad. In a surprise turn of events, the 44-year-old is now expected to start in Week 15. Should managers trust him as their starting quarterback in the fantasy playoffs? Let's dive in!

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Is Philip Rivers Starting and Playing In Week 15?

The Colts officially signed Rivers off their practice squad on Saturday ahead of his eventual start against the Seattle Seahawks. Even though Leonard has moved past his injury, the rookie is slated to serve as the No. 2 option behind the 44-year-old.

Rivers has not appeared in an NFL game since the 2020 campaign, where he played his final season with the Colts. During this season, Rivers totalled 4,169 yards with a 24:11 TD:INT.

Even though he is slated to get the start, managers should pump the brakes before putting him in their starting lineup, especially in the fantasy playoffs.

Should I Start Philip Rivers for Fantasy Football Week 15

This weekend, Rivers will face one of the most potent defensive units in the sport. The Seahawks enter this game allowing the second-fewest PPG to opposing offensive units, trailing just the Houston Texans.

In terms of yardage, the Seahawks enter the fantasy playoffs, averaging 197.0 passing yards per game and a stellar 91.2 rushing yards per game. Expect them to focus heavily on containing superstar running back Jonathan Taylor, which could cause some trouble for Rivers as he looks to kickstart the offense.

Over the past two weeks, the Seahawks have not allowed double-digit points in each contest. In Week 14, they held the Falcons to just nine points. In this game, Kirk Cousins threw for only 162 yards and threw two interceptions. The previous week, Max Brosmer of the Vikings struggled in his first career start, tossing four interceptions with just 126 yards against Seattle.

Overall, the Seahawks enter this contest allowing the 11th-fewest PPR points to opposing QBs, putting Rivers in the low-end QB2 territory. While the upside is there for him to have to push the ball downfield if the Colts fall behind early, given his extended absence from football and difficult matchup, managers should not look to start Rivers in any standard league.

Rivers is a desperation QB2 for those in Superflex formats.
