ANALYSIS: The Houston Astros promoted third base/outfield prospect Shay Whitcomb to the major leagues on Saturday. In a corresponding move, the Astros placed outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) on the 10-day injured list.

Whitcomb made his MLB debut last season but was only given a brief taste of the major leagues. Across his first 20 games in Houston, Whitcomb held a .200/.304/.293 line with three doubles, five RBI, and an 8:5 K:BB.

Through the first 53 games of the campaign with Triple-A Sugar Land, Whitcomb has been one of the most productive power hitters in the minor leagues. During this stretch, Whitcomb has launched 18 long balls and added 13 doubles. He held a .275/.357/.599 line and added six stolen bases.

While he progressed through the minor leagues primarily as an infielder, he made 22 starts in the outfield this season at Triple-A, which will open more opportunities for him during his second stint in the majors. With McCormick hitting the IL and Yordan Alvarez (hand) still on the shelf, Whitcomb could find a role in the outfield as the Houston infield is quite crowded.

While he does not have the clearest path to the everyday at-bats, his power upside makes him a strong option in all 12+ team formats. However, fantasy managers in shallow formats should wait for him to earn a starting role before adding him to their roster.
