ANALYSIS: The Minnesota Twins promoted Zebby Matthews after sending Simeon Woods Richardson to Triple-A St. Paul in May. Matthews enjoyed an impressive start to the season at Triple-A, which earned him the early promotion. Through 32 2/3 innings with St. Paul, the right-hander posted a stellar 1.93 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP.

He struck out 38 batters and showed elite command, allowing just nine free passes.

Matthews made his season debut on May 18 against the Brewers. The Western Carolina product logged just three innings of work in this outing. He allowed five hits and four runs, but did strike out five batters. Then, in his second start on May 24 against the Royals, he showed improvement, allowing just two runs across four innings of work.

In this start, Matthews struck out nine batters while allowing one walk.

Zebby Matthews still has some work to do but had an encouraging start today!

Last season in the majors, Matthews struggled, holding a 6.69 ERA with a high 1.65 WHIP. However, given the strikeout upside and strong command he has shown this season, Matthews is worth adding in all standard formats. If he continues to develop in the majors, he will be a valuable pitcher given his ability to boost your WHIP ratio.
