Wilyer Abreu is a fantasy baseball waiver wire pickup for outfielders. Target Wilyer Abreu as a free-agent outfielder for batting average on the waiver wire.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 6% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Wilyer Abreu made Boston’s Opening Day roster but was relegated to a platoon role given the crowded state of its outfield depth chart. The 24-year-old got off to a slow start with just two hits in his first eight games. Abreu finally warmed up with a pair of multi-hit games on April 11 and 13 and is now in the midst of a 10-game on-base streak.
Abreu actually went four straight games without a hit in the middle of this streak but drew a walk in each. He currently boasts a 15.3% BB%, which might be elevated thanks to a small sample size, but is not far from his 14.7% mark as a minor leaguer. Playing in each game of Boston’s recent three-game set against Pittsburgh, Abreu collected seven hits and three walks in 15 plate appearances.
Tyler O'Neill’s eventual return from the injured list would cut into his time share, but Abreu may hang on for some extra at-bats with Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela each experiencing a cold spell. The Red Sox have used him everywhere in the lineup except first and eighth. Abreu can give a boost to team batting average while this hot streak lasts and will kick in runs and RBI depending on where he slots into the lineup. He is best added in leagues that allow daily moves that can adjust if he is forced to split time again.
