What Are The New York Giants Biggest Needs?

The Giants have a few very important decisions to make this offseason, as Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney are their most notable free agents. There are rumblings Barkley won't be franchised tagged, and there seems to be a chance his days in New York are over. McKinney is projected to make around $13.5 million annually on the open market according to PFF. They could also use the franchise tag on him which is valued at $16.2 million for 2024.

While Jones hasn't lived up to his massive contract, it's tough to imagine New York taking on nearly $70 million in dead cap this year for him to play elsewhere. Their best option is to look to upgrade the weapons and build the offensive line around left tackle Andrew Thomas. Dexter Lawrence played at an All-Pro caliber level in 2023, and their defensive focus should be revamping the cornerback room.

Who Should The New York Giants Target This Offseason?

While Barkley probably should have been extended before Jones, it doesn't make sense to use the tag on him or pay him a big extension that doesn't fit the team's timeline. Tagging McKinney makes sense to keep him off the open market, and they could likely nab a receiver like Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze at sixth overall in the draft.

For the rest of their draft class, the Giants should look to add interior offensive line talent along with defensive backs. If they can't figure something out with Barkley, bringing in a Day 2 running back would be logical to try and find solid production at a relatively inexpensive price.

In terms of free agency, targeting linemen like Kevin Dotson or Michael Onwenu makes sense, while Bryce Huff and Leonard Floyd would be good for depth alongside New York's young pass rushers. Overall, the decisions on Barkley and McKinney will dictate the direction the Giants go this offseason.
