Phil Maton Traded to Rangers
Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals before Thursday's trade deadline. The Cardinals received two pitching prospects - lefty Mason Molina and righty Skylar Hales - as well as international signing bonus pool space in return. The Rangers bolstered their bullpen on Thursday in landing both Maton and southpaw Danny Coulombe, whom they scooped up in a trade with the Minnesota Twins. Maton was quietly excellent this year as a member of the Cardinals, with whom he recorded a 2.35 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, 48:15 K:BB, 20 holds, and two saves in 38 1/3 innings. Maton should at least give the Rangers a reliable setup man, but he may be a leading candidate for saves if Robert Garcia falters in the closer's role or suffers an injury. The Cardinals' late-game situation looks a lot murkier with Maton, former closer Ryan Helsley (New York Mets), and Steven Matz (Boston Red Sox) out the door in separate trades. Gordon Graceffo, JoJo Romero, and Riley O'Brien could be among Cardinals relievers in the mix for saves. It's a situation worth monitoring for fantasy managers.
